I freely admit that occasionally I do download music from the internet for free. I hasten to add that if I like the album I don't hesitate to go out and buy it. Sure I think it is wrong to take away money from someone who has worked hard to sell their product but why should I buy an album that turns out to be a load of rubbish? I would quite happily join a website that would allow me to listen to an album for lets say 30 days so I could decide if I want to purchase it or not. Does such a website already exist? I know there are sites where you can listen to samples of tracks but that isn't enough!
What are your views on illegal downloading? Is it ok or completely wrong?
[question posted by Humbug25]
responses and comments:
Well downloading music files isnt completely illegal if you are storing them on your computer only for 24hours, afterwards you must delete them.. There is much sites , and programs that allows you to download them easily ... Anyways yeah im pretty much illegal downloader, like probably 90% of the internet users ;) [sanokser]
Hi,humbug25 i dont download illegally i usually just buy things like music and movies but i think that they should change the laws to fit the Internet age i understand the copy right laws, but its not like those artist or actors are gonna go hungry if people download a few free songs or movies, just look at how most entainers live, i think they should make a program for the net where people can legally download music and movies free they should make it so the program and company pays the artist while allowing the people using the program to download for free, and i think that the music and movie industry needs to find a better way to work with the internet and i think if they make a totally free and legal downloading program that is paid for through sponsors and the the downloading company pays its artist a percentage of its revenue then that would be grate for both consumers and the entertainment industry, i do respect the artist becuse my parents are music artist to, but i do think that the industry should lighten up a little, and not penalize good people so harshly for loving music because if you think of it this way listening to the radio is free so why shouldn't downloading be free to as long as the artist still gets paid.happy [apples99]
Usually you can get a good enuf listen on the you tube,im nt for or against downloading from the internet and have to say that ive done it here, and until now I didnt really think it was any great crime, but if it has to stop then fair enuf.My lad uses MSN music and he pays for that,he said that I could always have his acount number and password,so that I could get my msic from there,if not im gonna use the Itunes ,they arent dear, and its pretty simple to use,and burn. [Abby123]
Hi Abby123 I can honestly say that I am not a big fan of tube maybe because I haven't used it enough to really figure it out and feel that it takes a lot of surfing to find what I am really looking for. I find it easier to go to the website type in what I want and download it then listen to it while playing in mylot. Still if they banned it for everyone and it no longer existed to download it then like you I say, so be it! Thank you for responding! [Humbug25]
Hi, there, and no i dont download illegally i try to go to legal sites only, but i wish they would change some of the laws when it comes to music downloading becuse not everyone has the money to buy whole albums, music should be openly available to everyone without a person spending a small fortune besides what if you only like one or two songs on the album, and i tend to like songs that are hard to find i finally found this song i love but i found out that i have to buy the whole album in order to get the song, they should develop a new system where both the artist and consumer can be happy, its really frustrating that we cant download with out worrying about getting in trouble. [apples99]
haha. i think you are right! we do not have the necesarry the buy the album if we just like some of the songs. [izhuce13]
I am not a douche Join http://tehparadox.com for free music and other stuff [DoucheBag]
Thanks for the link. I'll check it. Sometimes i do download the music i like. [husmear]
I have downloaded illegally in the past Humbug, but stopped a couple of years ago. Actually most of the stuff that I downloaded were songs that I already had on vinyl. I wish the music industry wasn't so hypocritical. They pay the artists a pittance compared what they cream off. However, I guess that it is immoral so I no longer do it. [p1kef1sh]
Hey there p1kef1sh You're showing your age there!! I think that artists make more money these days from interviews, tv appearances and air time. I think that if they had to rely on record sales (ok I'm showing my age now!) they would all be surviving on baked beans on toast! lol Cheers for your response! [Humbug25]
Rhaposdy is a good site to listen before buying. You are allowed to listen to the song as many times as you like. The cost of $9.99/month. Then if you want to buy, you pay them for the right to download & cut a CD. whistle [LadyMarissa]
Hi ya LadyMarissa Yes I did say for free, I am a cheapskate!! lol. I am a single mum with 3 kids so I do have my reasons! Thank you for taking the time to give me the information though! Thanks for responding [Humbug25]
Illegal? No. I am from Canada where it is legal to download but not upload so I dont share with anyone. [night71]
Hi there night71 Wow that seems really weird to me that uploading should be illegal I guess there is some logic in that somewhere. Thanks for your response! [Humbug25]
When people used to buy records people would lend them to other people and they'd record them so this isn't a new activity. I think we have to look at it as a sharing of wealth; many people make enough money to buy new albums, we'd all love to be able to do that but a lot of us can't afford to. My son and I download free albums but we also occassionally buy them too. I read a report the other day that said that there's revenue coming in from illegal downloaders also buying albums. Also if I didn't search for new music so I can download albums I wouldn't have heard of many of the bands and wouldn't be talking about them to other people. [aslanlight]
Oh one of those confused well before my time hahaha lol [Humbug25]
I totally agree with you and sometimes I like just one music then I would collect cds for one music only? Pffff. I download all my music for sure but I can compensate by going in a concert and paying the ticket if the artist is extremely good! I do not know about that website but what I do now is I use shoutcast radio I choose my music and do not need even to download they play it constantly, try it! [valeria1]
Hi ya valeria1 I too listen to the radio a lot and hear the same tunes over and over again but sometimes I like to listen to them in the car on long journeys and like to listen to what I want when I want. I listen to music through my pc at nightime when I am on mylot as I don't like what is on the radio during that time. Artists sure make their money when they do concerts not only from ticket sales but from the expensive merchandise sold there so they are by no means poor! Thank you for your response! [Humbug25]
I download stuff from online, i used to feel a bit guilty but now i am just used to it. I reckon its just money saving. [Azedbutt]
Hi ya Azedbutt I too used to feel bad about it but like I have said the artists certainly do make their money elsewhere and if money was no object to me I wouldn't hesitate to purchase albums! Thank you for responding! [Humbug25]
Hey, yeah i guess u am an illegal downloader! I only download maybe one or two songs off an album so why pay the full price for an album your not going to listen to ? If the song im looking for is just out then i will download it off itunes. x [dowie27]
Hi there dowie27 Oooops nevermind for responding twice though I am curious to know how you managed it!! lol I totally agree with you. I once bought an album because I loved two of the tracks that were on it and was so so disappointed with the rest of the album I wished I had never bought but they have my money now!! Now I never buy an album unless I have downloaded it and heard it first! Thanks for both of your responses!! lol [Humbug25]
Hey yeah i guess i am an illegal downloader! I only download maybe one or two songs off an album so why pay the full whack for an album you dont listen to ? If i cant find the song im looking for because its just new out then i will buy the single song from itunes. xx [dowie27]
Hi dowie27 Thanks again for responding!! lol [Humbug25]
I don't download music but sometimes i listen it. [smartbrain69]
Hi smartbrain69 So do you buy all your music then? Thanks for responding [Humbug25]
In answer to your question Humbug, most bands put at least 3 or 4 of their songs up on their myspace pages prior to releasing an album. Some (Firewater for example) put the full album up. I think downloading is necessary in these days, good bands aren't played on the radio very often (obviously depends on the channels available to you) and there's too much crap music around. If the prices of albums were made smaller (after all the fat cats of the music business take most of it) in the early 90s, this problem wouldn't have arisen or maybe less so at least but now the music is available freely, it's very hard to convince people to pay for the music, even if it would be cheaper. [dangaroo]
Hey there dangaroo (love your name by the way!!) You are totally right. I do like to buy cd's though. I have a friend who downloads albums and movies all the time then prints off the covers. He must be spening a small fortune on ink and I think the quality of a home Printer is as good either, I am a bit of a perfectionist with things like that. I am sure that it would be cheaper for him to buy the album at the end of the day rather spend so much money on the ink! Thank you for responding [Humbug25]
hi just for ur information over 90% of users download movies, music or software from internet but who is to decide what's legal or illegal. its not the artists who make company but the big companies who make profit, can u tell me y they put such a high price tag for music cds, dvds and softwares. because they want to make money like bill gates sell things at 100 times the money invested in it...this is not right... music is for all.....profit should be made but not like this...i think keeping price tag low will bring down illegal downloading if that's what u call....internet will become useless with no downloading then what will be the intenet service provider do..what will be the use of high speeds like 8 Mbps... [neothegod]
Hi there neothegod I didn't know that the percentage of users downloading was that high! They are trying to make a big deal about it here in the UK and tell us that it is the artists that are suffering and are threatening to cut people of the internet but I don't think the internet providers are happy to do that just yet and are sending out letters of warning at the moment. Thank you for responding [Humbug25]
Yes . Even I do download music from the internet for free., Even Games, movies. Yeah it a bad way to disrespect a Hard Work. But if Mylot Pays me for Discussion I will definitely for da album and i will also buy them. I think it is Wrong [BunnyxD]
Hi there BunnyxD So you too have a conscience like me!! thank you for responding!! [Humbug25]
Few years ago ,I did not download music from the Internet ,though the biggest reason is I haven not handle the computer . With the develop of Internet and experience of handle, I often download music from the Internet for free.Absolutely the action are illegal. [luckycui]
Hi there luckycui I guess it is no different to lending your friend a cd or something and they download it onto their compute, it's just that you are giving it to someone who is somewhere in the world and you don't actually know them! Thanks for your response! [Humbug25]
Well downloading music files isnt completely illegal.its really frustrating that we cant download with out worrying about getting in trouble I have downloaded illegally in the past Humbug, but stopped a couple of years ago.If the prices of albums were made smaller (after all the fat cats of the music business take most of it) in the early 90s .I think it is Wrong. [linuxtrap]
Hi there linuxtrap I do agree with you the massive profits are going into the wrong hands and it's not fair! I think that is what they should look into and reduce the price of cd's the cats are definately getting fatter! Thanks for your response!! [Humbug25]
the downloading is not illegal here in the netherlands but the problem is in the uploading thats not allowed to do. They can not forbid download bcuz the same you do with your mail ( thats also downloading ) and on the other side if production companies paying the actors less money then the movies would be much cheaper and then people would buy it. So i think its there own fault with doing this [kane1980]
Hi there kane1980 Yes I do think that users have been forced to share files because of pricing and that is why we are in the situation we are now about it all. Thank you for responding! [Humbug25]
Illegal downloading of anything that has copyright is illegal. Many people through out the world is doing it on the net. Downloading is not really my thing. Buying things is much better because you help others earn. [reckon21]
hi there reckon21 Even if the money is going into the wrong hands? Thanks for responding! [Humbug25]
hi friend, i want to download new release songs and song lyrics very much. And i also download my favourite actor and actress picture. take care. [vimaal]
Hi there vimaal I am glad you enjoy listening to music and watching your favourite actors! [Humbug25]
I think people can listen to a much wider range of music because of the internet. 99% of the music i buy is because i've heard some of it already by downloading it. Since i could download things i've bought much more music. If i hear something i like, i search out more and if i still like it i might go and buy it. However i reckon that most of the tracks i have downloaded have been things that i simply couldn't buy anywhere. I would happily buy them if i could but there're just not available. and that's the big problem with legal sites, look and the range available and then compare it with that available illegally. No contest. [indium]
Hi there indium That is a very valid point and very welcomed. There are certainly more reason for downloading than just the cost of buying albums! Thank you for responding! [Humbug25]
Are you calling me as an illegal d/l ? lol yes for me its like why should i waste money as im still depeding on my parents i dont want to ask money for listening to albums etc .. only after reading your dicussion i really know doing these stuffs is illegal.. well i dont really care about it i just cant stop listening to music or watch movies online or d/l them.. and i dont feel its illegal if its illegal then y they are allowing to upload such stuffs?( this question is to only those who consider d/l without permission as a illegal thing!) [shana123]
Hi there shana123 Well they say that you learn something new everyday and I guess you have!! It's just a bit of a worry for us Brits at the moment when they are threatening to cut off our internet supply!! Thank you for your response! [Humbug25]
Personally I don't and don't agree with doing so, but to each his own. I am not saying that I haven't done this, but rarely. Now I think that you have a great idea with having a site that would let you try out the cd before bying. I would use it, because I'm like you; I hate to buy something and then not like it. [jmarieh69]
Hi there jmarieh69 It is a good idea isn't it and maybe the site could combine it with cd sales. Who know's someone might pick up on my idea and set one up themselves!! Thank you for your response! [Humbug25]
Illegal downloading requires a deliberate attempt to remove otherwise inaccessible software, picture, word document, movie or video files by hacking in or using hacking software. I like to "share" files with others. If the computer media industry want to prevent "sharing" then they need to come up with unlock codes that corresponds to IP addresses to put on the products. Enough talk, time to pull up my "Limewire" and see what else I can "SHARE". [mrghill]
Hi there mrghill Yes but don't want them to do that really do we? Thank you for responding [Humbug25]
there isnt any legal punishment about downloading in turkey so there is no discussion about dowloading is legal or illegal but for your country i might be called illegal downloader because sometimes i download songs i like from the limewire watever i m still enjoying it and i will enjoy it as long as there is not legal punishment :) [skenthal]
Hey there skenthal I think anything goes in Turkey more or less doesn't it? lol Thank you for responding! [Humbug25]
It is not right to download something you haven't paid for. I have always believed this. My son was downloading music and movies until his oldest daughter who is now 13 made the comment to her Dad that that was wrong. She said this to him when she was younger. How do you respond back to a child when they ask a question like that. No matter how you look at it it s wrong. My son quit doing it altogether. It is called a example for your child. It is completely wrong. [sunshinelady]
Hi there sunshinelady We all need to set a good example for our children and are responsible for everything that we do is wrong not just downloading stuff illegally but I do hear where you are coming from. Thank you for your time to respond! [Humbug25]
Hello Humbug25, You can actually preview the tracks at YouTube or visit sites which review music album so you can make sure that you are getting a good deal. Yours Truly, Deltaswat18 Creator of Earn Money Online http://deltaswat.blogspot.com [deltaswat18]
Hey there deltaswat18 Like I said to a mylotter before I really am not too familular with YouTube and feel that I would be surfing around alot looking for what I want exactly. I want to be able to listen to whole album a few times before I decide to buy. Thank you for your response [Humbug25]
You know; you must be a mind reader because that is just what I was thinking. You know, there are many stores on line that sell music so why can't they set it up where you could down load and listen to an albam for say 15 to 30 days. I mean many software pages do that. They have a set amount of time that you can use it then it won't work then if you like it you can buy it. So why can't it be done with music or even movies? Sure it could. You know; may be we have caught the attention of some one who knows how to get that set up. Sounds good does it not? [jmarieh69]
Hi jmarieh69 It does seem like a good idea. You can do it with some online games. I once downloaded a game to test and after an hour it stopped but I did like it and if I had the money I would have bought the full version! I am not sure it would work for movies because alot of people, like myself, like to watch a film usually once and I don't tend to buy them to watch over and over again but I love to listen to music loads of times. Help is there anybody out there? Thank you for responding! [Humbug25]
I actually don't download illegally music, I like better buying original CD which gives better sound of the music. But, I have to admit that I do download some software.wink [pecevec13]
Hi pecevec13 Hmmmm I dunno which is the worse of the two sins? lol Thanks for your response [Humbug25]
What do you mean by illegal downloader???...confused I dont hack any website and download any files... To make it illegal.. I download only files which are downloadable.... Maybe the uploader should think before sharing files... whether those files are allowed to be shared... If the uploader has no problem.. why should there be problem for me downloading any files... happy If you call that illegal downloading.. then yes I download movies, songs, videos softwares.. and lots of stuff illegaly.. he helol... [venkygec]
And regarding a website to listen free music... or songs.. there are many... just google "listen songs" and you'll get so many sites....happy Enjoy listening to music... [venkygec]
All things in moderation! And I mean that sincerely. I "share" music online from time to time for a few reasons. One is that the industry charges way too much for the CD's in terms of quality and length. It costs them practically nothing to generate millions of copies, and then they slap on over charges to cover "property usage rights". It is all a freakin scam to make few people richer and the rest of us poor schlubs poorer. If they dropped the average price of CD's to something like 9 or 10 bucks, they'd almost completely halt the whole sharing thing online! Another reason why I like to find free samples of songs online is the fact that many artists come up with really crappy songs to fill the gaps on an album between the ones that most of us dig. Ever notice that only a handful of artists produce discs that you can just turn on and play strait through? (I.E. old Zepplin or Pink Flloyd...if you like that sort of thing...and don't forget Dr. Dre's The Chronic!) So why not just let us get the few that we want? After all, these artists and labels should be competing for our dollars...if they notice that their sales are down, don't just go sue some guy who can't afford to pay the suit anyway, DO A BETTER JOB! In the same breath, if one of us likes the songs that we found, then by all means support the artist and buy the album! And by the way, I know that money is money no matter how much or how little you have, but what is the deal with all of these affluent people crying about losing a few thousand in revenue here and there? These money hungry individuals gamble away more money in one night in Vegas than I make laboring for 10 years...let alone the expensive tastes they acquire once they "make it big". Just remember, if you keep your head about it and do these things in moderation, it is NOT stealing...that is just another label the industry lobbies have attached to keep more money in their pocket and out of yours......can't we all just revert back to grade school rules and share a little? [everyman444]
Hello everyman444 Bloody well said!! Thank you for taking the time to respond and so well!! [Humbug25]
well with the high price and expensive cd's it will definitely push you to download songs from the internet. I admit that almost half of my cd's are downloaded on the internet but what can I do, the price of one cd will enables me to has a food supply for one week.. that is how expensive an original cd here in my country. I think the only thing that artist get from illegal downlands is fame. [lossforredwords]
Hi there lossforredwords Wow your cd's are expensive where you are. At least they get fame which in turn creates revenue!! Thank you for your response! [Humbug25]
All of us like to be rewarded by our efforts, so do the singers/bands/musicians. They are expecting to get profit for their work by people buying his Cd's/Dvd's, so anyone wich are illegal downloading musics are desrespecting those rights, and i'm totally agains it. I don't buy much, because i've my life prioritys, but that only makes me more criterious about the music i buy. [paul_0000]
Sure it's not the musicians fault, maybe they should get their heads together!! [Humbug25]
Hi Humbug.. to be frank, i have been going through all the 32 responses to see if some one has given some links for free down loadable sites.. which they use, though i use some one.. I don't term it as illegal download, because it is there in the net for free downloads.. and we are not doing any illegal hacking..So in this connection my conscience is okay. [saivenkaat802003]
Howdy saivenkaat802003 Well it is considered illegal in England anyway. I can't copy and paste yet so I haven't put the link on of the site I use. Not far to go now before I can!! lol Thanks for your response! [Humbug25]
well i am.. i get my favorite softwares on my own (by a secret downloading site with 1-35 visitors everyday only and its going to be 3 years old domain this coming september) and yet they still dont go down.. and they update the site everyday and now i make a way to share it to others by my blog.. visit my blog (link at my profile) to request your favorite software. [wenczmastah]
Hi there wenczmastah Thank you for the info, if I need to download software I shall look you up. Cheers [Humbug25]
I have had sites like Kazaa on my computer ,but then when ive downloaded what I want to download then I have removed the Kazaa or limewire from the computer,i dont really like them being left on the computer,we most of us have done it at some time or another, its just the fact that we dont do it bigtime for any financial gain. [Bobbysox]
Hi there Bobbysox I thought kazaa didn't exist anymore? Oh well, anyway, I see no harm in it provided people are not doing it, like you say, for financial gain then that really is wrong! Thanks for your response [Humbug25]
no i download all my muisc for free. and i think it is wrong to download muisc illegal [headbanger21]
your welcome, i use bearshare or limewire it is free if you download the free version of the software [headbanger21]
