Can You Study While Listening To Musics

some of my friends can actually read their books while listening to musics. That is quite impossible for me unless i was not really intended to memorize the materials. by doing that actually distract my attention i could be drifted away from the books. i need quietness while studying unless it is for leisure or relaxation background soft musics are good. i prefer complete quietness for study purposes. how about you?

responses and comments:

I would find it to much of a distraction. So no I don't think I would even attempt it. I can block out other things like the TV on but music would interfere with the subject at hand. [moneymommy]
i can understand that.. i usually turn my musics off too when i need to really study..t hanks for sharing [lovesummer]

I used to be able to do this, but I can't anymore. I find it very difficult to focus on what I'm reading when there's music or the television playing in the background. [explorations]

if i am reading something and listening to classical type of music it makes my reading easier! :) [samanthatay321]

i don't study any more but when i did i listened to music. [ANTIQUELADY]

i actually like listening to music, soothing music, while i study it helps me concentrate. i don't know how, but it does. [taggedskate]

I am like you - I need complete silence when I am trying to concentrate, especially if I am trying to absorb material which is particularly complicated. I might have music on in the background if I am doing something which doesn't require that much brain power. For example if I am doing some simple formatting on a document etc. I know a lot of people who can concentrate just fine with music on in the background - don't know how they do it confused [UK_Shree]

Back in college I use to play songs while I was reviewing sometimes it works sometimes not especially if I love the song so much, I end up singing along with the song. I think what worked for me is to play songs which are not common to me or classical songs especailly when I am memorizing. [mariefe18]

Hi there, When I was a young girl still studying in school I found that I could concentrate better if I had some kind of music playing or the tv going. Not together of course. I don't mean that it was turned up loud, now that would have surely distracted me. But with the volume turned up loud enough just so that it was in the background. For some reason it made me feel relaxed and could concentrate on my studies. I'm still like that today when i'm reading or doing any kind of work here on the computer. ~proudnana~ [proudnana]

Hi lovesummer I love music.I would like to hear music when ever I do some job. When you hear music, your work output is more. That is why in some companies they play some music in low volume. Perhaps when you have to memorize some portions in your study ,you may need complete quietness. Happy mylotting [muru1950]

Yes, when I do homework, or any kind of work. I am always listening to music, if music is not a available I will start singing or humming. Sometimes I might just tap out the beat and people will join in. That makes me happy. So yea pretty much I can study when I am listening to music. [m0neymaker]
everyone is different thanks for sharing [lovesummer]

Yes! I find soft or classical music helpful wnem reading. I tend to memorize and understand better what i read when I read with music. [rj0921]
cool that is something different happy [lovesummer]

No way! or TV..Classical might pass but other than that noway! [autunno]

I love listening to music when i am doing my household chores like cleaning, washing, arranging and ironing clothes. But the things which require concentration then i prefer to do them in a peaceful environment.Like when i do my office projects at home or when i study the surroundings should be peaceful and the environment should be serene. I love music and music is my life.lolwubrasp [bamrahkirti]

I like a little bit of distraction while im studying so i usually do maths with music on my background..but now that i am working i dont remember the last time i studied lols..but yes i need distraction for doing math but for other subjects i prefer quiteness [walnutbrownie]

I really love listening to music. I can't concentrate doing important things while listening to music especially if I need to memorize something. It's fine with me if I'm only doing math computation. Every time I'm doing household chores, I usually listen to music for me to enjoy what I'm doing. [chris20]

The same, I can not read while listening to either music or other sound. How can any other people read their books while listening to music. I don't think they do serious readings. They must be jus browsing certain articles. [yanzalong]

No - I don't even listen to music when responding to posts either, for the same reason. When I listen to music, that is the only thing I am doing - listening to music. I hear what the notes are doing, the kinds of emotions they awake - it is a very active process for me, and I cannot do it while responding to mylot posts (or anything else.) That is the one thing I can't stand about muzak - they have this very soft music in the background while people are going about their business. I can't listen to music if most of the people are talking. I call people on the phone at work, and they have very good music on their hold lines. It infuriates me they interrupt every 15 to 30 seconds stating "Your business is important to us, but all of our associates are busy helping other clients ..." SHUT UP! Of course if their muzak are sponsoring trash, I thank God for the interruption (I walked out of a movie theatre once, waiting for a movie, because they had this GOD AWFUL pack of TONE-DEAF adolescents EVER to hit the public airwaves ... So, no, when I study, I study. When I listen to music, I listen to music. If some one tries to force me to listen to garbage when I'm waiting for genuine entertainment ... ... I say "Good-bye." pity I can't do that when I'm working on the phones ... our lines are recorded. [Qaeyious]
aha, thanks for sharing~! everyone is differenthappy [lovesummer]

It depends if I'm like doing homework out of a text book then I can. But if I'm like trying to read a book than I cant because its is such a distraction. I also cant read when people are talking near me I find that hard too. I usually when I want to read I go to my room and close the door so I cant hear the TV which people in my house always watch. [chestla]

I also used to hear music when studying. It depends on the work we are doing at studies. As you said it is not possibe for me to memorise the materials while listening music. When we prepare the notes, marking the important parts etc. it is good to listen music. But always we should not listen music at studies. When we want relaxation we can combine study and music. [btt2005]

Yeah, I used to listen to music while studying or working on assignments. It helped my focus on whatever I was doing. I can't listen to it too loud when doing that, but it's on loud enough to hear while studying or working on assignments. [shyguy_2004]

Soft or instrumental music help my mind and body relax... So, when I am very pressured with my schoold assignments and projects, I usually give my self a good break by listentine to mellow music.... When I am totally in a hurry to do lots of brain-storming assignments, or when I am deeply engrossed in reviewing for fast approaching exams, I still want a soft music played to serve as an ice-breaker! [jpedrasa91120]

yes i can cause without listening music or watch tv i cannt study very well. musid can give me pleasure [noniefam]

Hi Summer multitasking is kind of a myth to me. I just cannot do two-three things simultaneously. Well, I can but they are hugely affected. Like I can knit with a normal design and listen to music but I cannot read and listen to music. One of the tasks would be affected no matter what. I feel, real multitasker are rare to find. We do various things together like cooking, doing chores, mylotting but one job is taking a particular times and not all together. That's not multitasking in the real sense. happy [mimpi1911]

Sometimes I can, it all depends on the music and my mood. If it is classical music or instrumental, then yes, I can easily study to that, but if it is music that gets stuck in my head to easily and is distracting me from my work, then I will not listen to music. [rogue13xmen13]

i have to find the right music to go along with what i am reading. For things like school work i tend to pick things that don't have words in it. For just reading a book for fun it can have words but it tends to be mellow. I just need the distraction in the back to stay focused. Also they have found that if you play the same music (without words in it) when going over material you need to learn, you will retain it better. [ahssabino]

I am also one of them . I also read books while listening to music. My interesting subject is mathematics. When i do maths question that time i listen music. musics do not disturb while reading or writing something. [cpnarnaulia]

I absolutely agree with you when i write ,remenber things or even just enjoy my reading.i can't have the music going on~ i think it may probably disturb my thought but my roommate is just on the opposite, she can't do any homework unless listening to the music, even when she do the sport ,she need to enjoy.she says,"she can't live without music. different people have different ways~~ haha ~~ [dingsansan]

he...I have to say thats really a bad habbit and thats really a problem to me.I cannot concentrate on my job while I am listening music. But If I dont listen it,I still cannot forcus on the job.I just fell something missing.so its so weired. [wdw1989]

Hi, I don't usually study with the radio on. I want quiet place when I am studying especially when I am memorizing something. But if I am just reading something for leisure its ok. Take care [red_amethyst]

There are times I find it helpful. At times too it is a distraction especially when I wanted to sing the song with that, I would be singing along rather than studying. [adoremay]

I use to study only math while listening music. I can also read now only math while listening music. with music its very difficult to do math's question for me, I can study other books while listening music. [iftikharsumn]

Yes I was able to do it on my study time. Actually with music only I can study well but it should be some light music. Music actually encouraging us on any duty. But if it very serious subject need more concentration to remember formula and all I need quietness in the environment, actually I use to study early in the morning that was the wonderful time to read high core subjects. Evening is for subject like history some etc. [murugezh]
There were some claims that some music such as those by Mozart actually improves concentration and helps you study more efficiently. happy [lordwarwizard]

I feel music can be very relaxing and enjoyable. It can also put you in the mood for most anything you have to do. I don't like it played loud, but down low in the background can have a peaceful sound. The only time I like it turned up a bit is when I'm doing housework. So if I'm reading yes I find music to be very comforting. [KLOake]

Yes, I can do some serious job while listening to music. The background music tuned low is providing good atmosphere for efficient work. I learned that it holds true esp. for males, though i do not know why. Maybe the soft music helps tune in the right mood for the boys to study, who otherwise would be distracted to wild thoughts or activities beyond control. That is only my guess. We need to consult professionals to reach the final conclusion. [zhuhuifen46]

er, i usually did like that. most of time i can study while listening music. when i want to read books or want to do some study, but the surrounding is noisy, then i will take out my mp3,listening the music, maybe at the beginning, it's very difficult to pay attention to the work, however, a few miniutes later, it will be ok. i will forget the music, and pay no attention to what the song or lyric is. the next time when i found i was in the music, it maybe one or two hour later, and i had done lots of my work. at that time i can find that i really forget the music. i think it's great to study in music. (*^__^*) i like that he he ........ [crystal2008]

hi lovesummer, I like music very much,i read my books,on that time i listening to music.I am not listen in exams time, because exams are very important so i don't listen in exams time. [madhu_yl]

It all depends on my mood. Sometimes when I'm tolerant I have music in the background, but when it's something really important I tend to do things in silence because I want to hear myself think. [chance2691]

Sometimes I love to do that, but if i had a serious test or quiz I'll never do it. But i know one of my friends he can't stand studying without music, even if he is doing math [gie2910]

For leisure reading i don't listen to music and i can't concentrate from tv noise or any other noise for that matter that's too loud or inconsistent. As for textbooks, if it's wordy and hard to read i'll listen to some music in the background but at a low volume. I can listen to classical music and do mathematical calculations, it's quite relaxing and i feel like it can help me perform better. But overall, i need quietness to study well and concentrate. [antioxidant]

Hi lovesummer, Sure I can! In fact, I used to find those noisy places to study in. The noisier, the "quieter" and the better I can concentrate. Absolute silence sometimes freak me out and I find it harder to concentrate on my studying. blink lol [lordwarwizard]

It depends on the book and the music. The music can't be too familiar or with lyrics, or I'll be distracted from reading if it's a text book. When it comes to novels, I can listen to pretty much anything because then it doesn't really matter if I am distracted. [ceci2176]

I'm one of those people who cannot stand being in a room without either the tv or radio on. If it is too quiet, I can't concerntrate on anyting or even sleep. I have a fishtank close to the bed so I can sleep properly, and the tv is on much of the time just so the house isn't so quiet. When I still lived with my parents, I was not allowed to have any noise when doing my homework or studying. The room had to be very quiet. This didn't really work for me, but rules were rules. Once I moved out of home and had a radio on all the time, I noticed that I did much better with my assignments and studies, and it was because of the background noise coming from the radio.
