Do You Research The Artists That Play Your Favorite Songs

Most people love music but there are some people that take it to a different level. They actually research and learn all about the artist behind the songs. I am not so much the kind of person that does this. I usually just enjoy their music but my b/f is just the oppisite. He loves to learn all about the artists and often loves to read and watch biographies about them and their band. What kind of music lover are you? Do you just like the songs or do you like to learn about the people that sing and play them too?

responses and comments:

I like to research and learn about the artists that I love because their music plays a huge role in my life and those artists are also massively inspirationly to me because I am a musician myself. I also like to see when they are touring and when they will be coming out with a new album and what not. There are a lot of bands out there that I could listen to religiously. [jambi462]
Hi jambi! My b/f is a musician too. He has a great love and knowledge of music. Maybe most musicians often research their favorite bands. I love music..don't get me wrong...but I'm not as in to the bands as much as I am their music. I am by no means musically inclined either. I paint and write. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]

Hi JenInTN, I don't habitually carry out checks on my favourite artists but lately I have been having a look on Wikipedia, just as a matter of interest. It doesn't go beyond that though; if I like a particular artist's music it might prompt me to check, particularly if they're fairly new on the scene or if there's something in the tabloids about them, but other than that I just like listening to music and don't always feel the need to find out about the person who's behind it. Fiona. [fmpisces]
Hi Fiona. I am much the same way. I am happy with what they have to offer more on a public basis. I have read articles of interest about this one or that one but I am not near as musically educated as my b/f is. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]

The music is my main focus, it is fun to learn a bit about the artist, but is not important to me. I enjoy the music. [savypat]
That's my main interest too savypat. I just like the music. My boyfriend is forever watching or reading something about his favorite artists. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]

Hi JenInTN, I used to research bands when I was younger but now not so much. I have watched documentaries and such when on the TV about musicians or bands that I like. I have a few friends that are musicians and they still read up on all the stuff about bands but I guess they do it because it is part of the job. I still occasionally do a search for a band online but that is mainly just to listen or watch a music video. [thezone]
Yes I know exactly what you mean. I have a friend that is a sound engineer and he cold never enjoy music for what it was, he always used to analyse and deconstruct a song but we love him anyways [thezone]

HI JEN, i only listen to country & elvis & always oldies but goodies so have learned things about the singers i have liked over the years.I would never resaerch any singers i like just like them for what they sing.Their personal stuff doesn't bother me one way or the other. [ANTIQUELADY]
That's the way I am too Jo. It really doean't matter to me one way or the other about their personal lives. I just like the music. I am starting to think that this is a musician kind of thing to do..research and all. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]

I like to know about the artists because If I like their music I want them to do well in their career and Like to know about their background as it gives them a more human side. They have the same problems as many normal people do. It also helps with when they have a new album out or if someone is talking about the artist. [lakerfanster]
Good for you! I always wanted to play an instrument but I am not really musically inclinedsad [JenInTN]

For the most part I just like the songs. If something is said that perks my interest I may do some research. I usually hear all I want to on the tv about any certain personality. I love rock and roll and enjoy the shows on about Kiss and such. [celticeagle]
Same here. The BIO channel has ones on bands and their members sometimes and I catch those occasionally. I love the old Janis and Jimi and those too ofcourse. [celticeagle]

I am the same as you are but my freind is allot your bf dose the same thing he check out everything about them I like all kinds of music I like Beatles,The Stones, and all kinds singers. cd [crazydaisy]
I like that music too. I have really learned a lot about musicians since being with my fellow. He does a lot of research and knows a lot too. I'm not near as interested in the little things like that. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]

I like to listen to the music. However, I like to learn about the song, the artist, and the music. I'm probably like your boyfriend. Hehehe. lol, but I don't need to watch biography. I just like to know who and what I'm listening to. Music is our lives, right? Take care! [callarse1]
I can see why it would be so interesting but I have never really took great interest in the actaul people behind the music. I am learning more all the time though because he has great focus on the details. You are a lot like him..lol. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]

i have a lot of favorie songs. and i guess i researched about almost everything on the net. from artist to lyrics songs and videos. i also researched songs that my son will enjoy and new songs that we can use for our band. sometimes i no longer researched for the artist exept if the artist are one of my favorite. i heard that pearl jam has a new song.... that i will do researching on the net later. hello jen, enjoy your weekend. [se7enthbird]
There comes a time when our interests curve a bit. That's great that she is researching that..you and your son will be well taken care of. [JenInTN]

I always do this because these people influenced me. They also gave me one of the best moments of my life! I love their image, music and career. That's why I trying to find out more and more about them. The information I find in books about them, autobiographies, web-sites and magazines. I'm kind of huge music lover! [stand87]
Very well explained. We want to know all about the things that influence our lives and if music is a huge part of your life..you want to find out all you can about the people presenting it. I love music but you are the kind of music lover that has taken it to the next level. It's great. My b/f is very educated as well with music and bands. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]

Yes I do research the artists that I love. That is because life is one of the major inspiration for music and knowing what inspired them to write such songs is sometimes very important to know. They say experience teaches all and only few people take the experience they get and are very successful in putting them out in form of art like music. I always read up about the artist on wiki to know atleast something about them. bournehappy [bournecaindelta]
Your right..there are only a few people that are able to share their experiences with the world. It does make you wonder how, when, and where it all come about. It's also neat to find out what luck chanced upon them to take them to that place where they could share. There are a lot of very talented artists that never "make it". Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]

Hello jenin i prefer jazz music and yeah i research each of my favorite artist's lives before but now no more i don't time anymore of that..lol..it takes time of doing it..thanks for the nice topic... Mobhomeir here... [mobhomeir]
Hi mobhomeir! I know what you mean about being short on time. It can be neat to find out things about the people behind the music we love but I am nowhere near as dedicated to it as my b/f. Thanks for responding and take care. [JenInTN]

I love all different kinds of music and just enjoy listening to it. Most of the time I don't even KNOW who is singing and sometimes when I do know, I don't even know who they are. It's all about what the music sounds like to me. [idowrite72]

First of all I would like to say that this is quite a good discussion! :) Anyways, as for myself, it really depends. My favourite artists I know some things about the band itself like where they are from and sometimes about the band members themselves as well. And when I get into a new band or a band I just found out about and really enjoy then I usually research into them as well. [grunge_avenged]
I am into music but unfortunatly I am not musically inclined..lol..I have always wanted to be but never really got the chance to play any insturments. My b/f can play anything with strings though. It amazes me how we can go into a music store and him just pick different stuff up and start playing it. I wish I were like that..lol. [JenInTN]

hi!.. well, being a fan of a particular band. you really want to know all about them. like what your bf do.. readin the backgrounds, their biographies. but well others cannot appreciate it because they dont love doing it. it simply describes that you are not a fan. and you have other passion.. [angela018]
Hi angela! I think I am a fan..I'm just a different kind of fan. I am content with their music and the people behind it are not my focal point. I do have stronger passions as far as my artistic side but I do love music too. I think that alot of my b/f's interest comes from the fact that he is a musician too. Thanks for the input. [JenInTN]

Hi jen, same 2 ur b/f. My favorite band is " bhumi", a bengali band and fav artiest is nachiketa. Being they r my favorite i have searched all d details of them. I am a very sensitive listener who often try to enter to d purport of a song. Lol [shibham]
There is noway better to get intoo the workings of a song than to find out where and why it come. There are a lot of people that like to know about their favorite band or singer. There are also a lot of resources out there to research with too. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]

I do read about the artist who sang my favorite songs, what inspire them to write the songs and the background behind. I also read on the singers' personality, horoscope, hobbies, way of life through their blogs and any fan club activities. I believe from this you can get to know the sincerity of their works, and how they are improving to come out with new album releases. [naka75]
You sound like a music lover that definitely take it to the next level. It's interesting to find out what inspired your favorite song. I have been very surprised as to what it was sometimes. I think that bands actually appreciate the fact that people do this too so as not to make the words their own. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]

Hi,JenInTN,I guess I am the one who research and learn all about the artist behind the songs. For example ,I am addicted to Taylor Swift now.I know her because a movie. In that movie she sang a song and I think it sound beautiful. After I watched the movie ,I searched all her songs and news. And I download all her songs now.I try to buy her CDs,but it's difficult in China. Then I join in her official forum. And I gather all her news, pictuers, videos, informations.I try to know everything about her.I also learn to sing her songs, and I sing it everytime I come to the karaoke. So you see it's really crazy . [langjipingzong]
Yes,it's really a huge tiem diffrence and I think I should see the nation first when I say "sweet dreams". [langjipingzong]

I'm not a musician but I like to explore and be aware of the background of my favourite bands and their members. I guess I was influenced years ago by the local radio's 'discomentaries'. That was way before Biography. By going through a band's material chronologically, you see how bands evolve. Now whenever a cover of a song is done, I like to discover the original version. [TremendousMachine]
That's true. Most all songs are covered these days. It's amazing the difference in them sometimes. It is interesting when I here a song these days that was an original to someone else a long time ago or even just an original to the band. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]

For me, it depends. Sometimes I'm motivated to learn more and sometimes I'm not so motivated. More often I like to research why the person wrote the song they did, the way they did or if the singer didn't write it, why the lyricist wrote it, but I guess that's what I get for being a lyricist myself haha. I tend to want to know the background to every song I hear. [cherishxbunny]
:) I think you're right about that. Most, not all, but definitely at least 80% of us that are doing our research are in some type of music career or hope to be. :) [cherishxbunny]

hi JenIn, I do that.happy I recently saw a new artist on youtube and I totally don't have any idea who she was. Then, I learnt she's an up coming artist in UK. Her name is Pixie Lott and I just love her single "Mama Do". I often research on some artist after hearing a great song from them. It gives me an idea where she/he come from and the story behind her/his music.happy [danitykane]
Hi danitykane. There are a lot of people thatlove to learn about older and up and coming artists. Some of them have lived very interesting lives. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]

I typically do that, but generally so that I associate with things I approve of. People typically end up like those they idolize. So if you idolize a drunk drug using wife abusing idiot, you will be associated with that, and typically end up somewhat like them. So, yeah, I do. Just to make sure they are decent people. [andy77e]
There is a bit of contradiction when you put it that way..lol..Thanks for the detailed response. [JenInTN]

I love most genres of music, I just don't like too much rap and metal rock. I love pop, hip-hop, and blues. About the artist, I only research about them if they're my favorite artists, like what I do with MJ. But if I like the song only, I don't bother learning about the artists, unless there's something that really intrigues me about him/her/them. [mjcookie]
I wouldn't research unless they actually intrigued me either. I am more about the music I guess. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]

Hiya Jenin.. hope you are doing fine. Sometimes I do that. I like to research what type of music I'm listening to, the history of the singer or the band and also sometimes try to read stuffs on them. And mostly, I'll do it whenever I am very interested in a particular song I heard. [zed_k4]
I'm definitely well and fine, thanks Jenin. A good research definitely goes a long way, I couldn't agree more... [zed_k4]

I am in the middle on this one. I like a wide verity of music some I just listen to and some I find out more about who is playing it. Being some what of a musician my self sax payer to be exact, I started playing in the 4th grade and at 13 I was making money doing it. So I can understand where some of the music is coming from and when something strikes me I will find out more about the artist behind the music. [AllenSilvey]
That's great you are a musician. I bet it's great to have a talent like that. I am always amazed when I hear my b/f play. He's one of those that can play anything with strings..lol..He sings some too. I usually just stick with hearing the music but I have had a crash course in musicology..lol..Thanks for responding and welcome to myLot. [JenInTN]

Hey Jen! Yup! I love to know about the artists too and so does my boyfriend! He loves to watch the videos and watch BET and we love to buy all the latest CD's! He bought me the new Rhianna CD for Christmas because I begged him too! He bought the new R Kelly CD for himself! I like the old time Rock CD's too! I like a variety of music! We both love R&B, and he likes some Jazz! So we always have some kind of music playing in the house! I am mylotting and he is changing the bed and listening to something in the other room and will be ironing his clothes for work while I am frying pork chops for dinner! I can hear his music playing and it is great! [Opal26]
I love to listen to Music all the time, whether I am on the pc like now I am listening to Robin Trower on Spotify. I also listen to music in bed with my headphones before I go to sleep. [lakerfanster]

Well, I used to like to read all about my favorite bands, but I think that was just a pre-teen/ teen thing. I'd read all about them, get as many pictures of them as I could, read fanfiction, etc. Now I may read up a little bit, but I don't obsess myself with it. If there's a particular song I like, I may try to find out who wrote it, and if it was the artist, what the artist wanted to convey, or if the Lyrics were true to what the artist experienced... but I don't dwell on it, I just "curiously" look. [SomeCowgirl]
Yea, I think it's most likely interest to see how the band / individual artists started out, maybe he's trying to find the key to fame... [SomeCowgirl]

I am fans of a few of my favourite artists on Facebook. It allows me to find out more about them and get in there before other people may find out about concerts etc. I find the Internet to be an incredible tool for finding out about your favourite artists. [lakerfanster]
What other uses do you use for facebook other than the keeping up with friends? I am really curious about it but have never really taken the time to research it. I had an account on Myspace but I never check it or use it. That's been forever ago. [JenInTN]

If I just kind of like the song, nope. If I love it, yep, I will do some research. And if I really love it, I will actually buy books, watch biographies, etc. [dawnald]
I can understand that. Sometimes a song can make us very curious about where it come from. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]

I have an MP3 and the music on that varies from Alice Cooper to Abba! I love all sorts and listen to whatever takes my fancy at any given time. I do have favourites like Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen and I have read a lot about them but I wouldn't go as far as learning details or researching them. With Jon Bon Jovi I'm just happy looking at photos of him (LOL)! [paula27661]
LOL...he is easy on the eyes..LOL..Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]

I would say I do abit of both. If I find a new artist that I really like I will research to see what other songs, albums etc they have out. And I do find it very interesting to read about how they broke into the business. But that's pretty much where I leave it. I don't follow them as far as what they are up to on a regular basis. Just check on what new songs or albums they have coming out from time to time. I don't like huge crowds so I'm not much of a concert goer but occasionally will watch one on tv or the net. [Tallygirl09]
I agree completely that some songs never take off but once I hear them, I love them. So that's another reason that I'll check out groups to hear what other songs they have or had in the past. And I can also find out who influenced them and maybe find another artist to check out. We all know that radio stations only focus on a few songs at a time from any one artist. I sure do love my Mp3 so much better than radio! [Tallygirl09]

yes musicians i love, movie stars i love, and people in history that interest melol im a nut like that. i guess i do enjoy surfing for info.rolleyes [bunnybon7]
There is a lot to learn about. I enjoy seeing how people chanced upon their lives..lol. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]

Hi JeninTN.Well I am kind of an intermediate of the two.I dont do research on the artist but I do some on the song I love. For example I have read various articles about my favorite song Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin.Anyways have a nice day .. --cryshamescry-- [Shames]
Your like me then. There are certain songs that would make me check into is origin but for the most part, I just like the music. That's an awesome song by the way. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]

I'm like you. I just go for the music. I save my research skills for other things. LOL! Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija [kellyjeanne]
LOL..it is easier to just listen to the music. I love music but I don't much research where it comes from. Take care. [JenInTN]

It depends. Most of the time I do not think too much about the artist. Actually there are dozens of songs that I LOVE, but can't name the artist who sings the song. It was really funny, one day my hubby and I were playing a "Name That Tune" game. He goes to this website that lists the top 100 songs from each year, and he'll go through and play them and I have to name the song and artist. Well he played this one song I always heard on the radio and I said "Oooh! I love that song, but I don't know the artist" it was Maroon 5. Awhile later he plays another one and I said the same thing... again it was Maroon 5. I discovered that day that I was a fan of Maroon 5 and I just didn't know it. So then a few hours later I'm listening to the radio, and the station was doing a contest to win Maroon 5 concert tickets. I called up and actually won! It was actually hilarious because if we hadn't played that game, I wouldn't have bothered trying to get the tickets. Every once in awhile a particular artist will strike a chord with me and I'll want to know more about them, like after the Maroon 5 concert I did research them because I wanted to know more. But again, most of the time I do not go out of my way to learn something about an artist just because I like their music. [katsmeow1213]
I am exactly the same way when it comes to songs and artisits. I recognize some of the older songs and artists but that's because I have heard their music alot. I usually have no clue who plays what. I just know I like the song. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]

I do this sometimes. Music is my life and can't be without it. If I want more information on a particular song or artist even though I know them, it really helps. [libby2009]
Oh, okay. American Idol here I come! [libby2009]
