Does Loud Music Hurt Ears

I am a regular user of Public transportation and travel around 2 hours just going to my workplace. In order to overcome boredom, I prefer listening to music especially energetic ones. If the song is a fresh song and I like its rhythm very much, I tend to hear it loudly. But sometimes, I experience headache and also ears aching. This can be attributed to the loud music played as it is evident from the recent scientific studies that loud music can be harmful to your ears. In order to counter this, I started listening with reduced volume which sometimes to me, reduces the energy level generated by the song. If the song is a touching one, then it is ok to listen in less volume. Now I am reducing the number of songs to listen as I am feeling that my ear drums might rip apart one fine day. Mylotters, any comments on this?

Too much of anything is not good. Do it in moderation. Loud music through earphones can damage your ears. I am just wondering why you get your energy from music. Is it energy? or it just wakes your system up? Music has no energy in itself. Music can induce sleep or wake you up and that is not energy. It only triggers responses and reactions. It is not like the sun with energy. [macoyv70]
oh I guess we differ with our definition of energy. You are talking about mental, psychological and emotional energy while I am referring to it as physical. So no point in discussing further. [macoyv70]

Yeah its true loud music is very damaging to your ears, a documentary i watched found that ipods and such devices have the ability to exceed the recommended decibels that your ear should be exposed too, it can result in your ears aching like you said when could lead to burst eardrums and worst of all deafness [OConnell87]
I cannot completely avoid listening to the music but I have evolved a new strategy to overcome this pain. I will make it a point to listen only 3 songs in 2 hours which relieves the ear drum of unnecessary hassle. Deafness happens when you receive too much sound for long time. I am just avoiding this kind of situation. [tskmjk55]

yeah, loud music hurts my ears. i can never EVER have my iPod on full volume, no matter what song it is. it makes me jump when it's too loud, then it does hurt my ears. my boyfriend has his on soo loud, i don't know how he does it! [xsammiex]
My brother follows the same strategy but I dont like listening to a mind boggling song in a low voice unless the song has a kind of soothing effect or induce into sleep. So I prefer medium high pitch for high beat songs. [tskmjk55]

My opinion is that what you think is true.Continuous exposure to loud sound does causes damage to your ear tissues specially when you are hearing it over an earphone. My suggestion try to use it as little as possible and also less volume please. My friend is already suffering some problems because of that habit of his. [Shames]

loud music will hurt your ears whether earphones or loud speakers, ears need rest, if they keep on hearing loud things then slowly they keep loosing their sensitivity, and eventually you become more and more deff. periodically listening to music in moderate levels is ok but not at very high volume... i listen to music most of the time and have enabled the volume stabilizer so as not to go beyond that, thanks to my sonyrasp [voldrox]
This is what my ENT doctor told me. Ears will have a sensitive organ which maintains balance of our body as well processes acoustic information. This will be damaged if you hear a deafening sound for a longer period of time. [tskmjk55]

yes, it will reduce your quality of your ears.perhaps, you can ear 2 hours daily.it will not affect you. [peercc]

Well we dont have to worry here in kenya..because we have the funkiest& most pimped public service vehicles..i should upload the pics of our shuttles..just keep a watch of my profile pics..& they play loud music as hell for we enjoy it that way.. [deewinc]

to much of anything is not good, but whene it comes to music with me i love to have it full blast! it dosnt hurt my ear but it does hurt others. I think that my ears are made for music and music only! [joshznew]

Too much loud music will hurt your ears and leave you with a huge headache. If you listen to loud music over a long period it will erode the little fine hairs in your ears that enable a person to hear. If that continues then a person will become deaf. I personally dont prefer loud music to much. [zenrat1984]

I always listen to really loud music. When I first got my ipod I started listening to really low volumed music but as time passed I started making the volume louder every day and eventually I got the point where I didn't even realize that the music was that loud. I listen to music when I am playing basketball so I pay more attention to the game then the music. I also have a problem hearing with one of my ears. It may be from the music but then again it may not be. I'm not really sure but the point is that I listen to loud music and I have hearing problems. [hiitssandra]

It's ok to blast music once in a while. I probably do it way to much but if you're getting headaches i would turn it down a little. Over a long period of time it might damage you're hearing but i don't worry about that. I can't imagine listening to my music at a low volume because it does take away the overall impact. Hope that helps or something. [Kritz7861]

I too have heard that our ear drum get affected due to loud music. [jaisundar]

me too, when the miusic is too loud,my ears will be very aching, becsuse of this,i also ask my friens, they told me that it will real hurt our ears,so nowadays,i only listen to the soft music, and my ears is ok now, [fly1987119]

Sure, loud sound is quite hamrful for hearing. We shall turn down the volume if we use the earphone. But since it's noisy in public, so people tend to turn up the volume. It is not good anyway. I love China [youless]

If you ask a DJ why there is always music playing in their house, it's not only because they like that music, but also because if it's completely silent they hear this constant BEEEEEEEEEEEEEP. You can imagine that it is quiet irritating. So yes, loud music hurts your ears [toonvk]

Yeah take care of your ears. You are going to be needing them. I had an uncle that all he would do is bang to loud music like metallica and hard rock and electronic in the car. He had put in speakers and the whole deal. Well now he can still hear but he hears less than he should. So please becareful about it. Take care of your ears. Just listen to the music at the level where you are not hurting them and you can stand the sounds of the music not the where your head hurts later on... take care maria [maria120883]

studies have shown that you can only listen to music for 15 minutes (on a volume that you still hear what's happening around you) without your ears being hurt. But in this case I'm talking about them little headsets to put in your ears, not about speakers or anything [toonvk]

Of course yes. Loud music not only hurt the ears it makes the sense of music lousy. Music is divine as i have heard and when heard with proper volume it really soothes your nerves and gives you a sense of relaxation. Some public transport really make your journey horrible with loud and lousy songs. And when you are happy with loud music it is a warning that you are turning deaf and better consult your ENT. [bewitched13]

Yes, loud music can hurt ears, in fact excess of everything is very bad. Don't try to hear anything loudly whether it is your favorite song or not. [airakumar]

Yes, loud music irritates my ears most especially hard metal type of music.. yeah, sometimes I listen to rock but i don't like too much shouting.. i want something nice and cool.. I also listen to R&B, alternative, house and some reggae music.. [gracie04]

my ipod is my electronic i am plugged into it all the time. the key is to have it set at a low volume, but loud enough for you to hear it and enjoy it. i also wear ear plugs to gigs and clubs. having the volume loud is damaging to the ears you need to watch that because once you rupture your ear drum that is it for you my friend, in the mean time why not go and see a doctor if you are worried. [mama_bear]

Aye, did you ask me somehting......what did you say, talk up sonny, I can't hear you :) Yeah I've always loved my music loud and have probably had to many sore ears and headaches and will probably suffer for it when I'm older....but it's good while it lasts and how do these old rockers who still do concerts have their music so loud....lol? [chileman]
Super chill man...I think if you have strong willpower, you can overcome any obstacle... [tskmjk55]

Yes it is bad for you. It can damage your eardrum and over time you may become unable to hear softer sounds like a whisper or a tv running. But if you think the risk is worth the reward, go ahead, screw up your ears! You'll regret it when you are 80 years old and cant hear what your grandchildren are saying. [frawlz]

hello there...yes!!! listening to loud music really hurts my ear. it does not only hurt my ear but it also gives me headache!i do not understand other people who prefer to listen to loud music, even other loud noise makes my head ache. no offense to others but its kind of odd that others listen to loud music when they're not even deaf or they're not hearing impaired.oh studies have proven that listening to loud music will damage our ear drums. have a nice day... [bhabytart]

Hi, ya you're doing the right thing. It's nice listening to songs and musics, but we should do it moderately. Loud musics can really harm our ears and ling time exposure to high volume sound will affect our ear as well as our health too. Moreover if you're listening to the songs using earphone, then it maybe have a little bit more harm, which comes from the radiation of electromagnetic waves (if i've not mistaken). For me, i cannot stand listening to loud musics or sound. It makes me feel uncomfortable and i actually can feel that my heart feels uncomfortable too. So, listening to musics in lower volume should be good, and relaxing too. [aikhong]

Friend, you are right. Listening to music with loud valume daily will affect the eardrum. While we listen to music with loud volume in houses or clubs or pubs it won't affect much, but when you listen to songs with loud valume in ear phones the ears will get problem since it the ear phones are very close to eardrums. I advice you to listen with low volume and also don't listen more than an hour contineously. [joanahw]

Too strong music will hurt our ears and is better not to turn the volume too loud. Maybe you can take some of your travel time to read some books ? I hope is a good idea for you. [vingyan06]

its always tempting to listen good music with high volume.but as the sound level rises i becomes sort of noise.you not only damage your ear man .do u know listening to loud music also raises the heartbeat and blood pressure.its not good and not advisable .so stay safe.dont hear loud musics from now on.may b you should listen to soft music.those are nice to hear on less volume besides it also relives you from stress.hope you take this seriously and stay healthy [naresh_coolking]

Yes, loud music will hurt your earsdrums. I do like some song a little loud but not so loud that it starts my ears to hurts. i do not know how some people can play their music so loud that it can be heard 2 blocks away. [happy6162]

Yes, loud music is certainly not good for our ears, especially in the long run. It's good to hear that you had reduced the volume. However, I will suggest that it's also not good for your ears to hear music with a earphone everyday for a few hours. It may not be good for your ear drums in the long run. I do understand that it's really bored traveling in public transport without listening to music or doing anything else. You may want to try reading a book sometimes on your trip to work instead of listening to music. Give your ears a rest sometimes, and it may be better in the long run. [gcorp09]

too much of every thing is bad. it will surely affects u. yes i too accept that music does energises u but not loud music. devotional and slient instrumental music soothes your mind and body a lot. [kavikent]

Never, ever listen to loud music over head phones! Loud music is definitely harmful to your ears. If you want to crank up the tunes do so at home but take care to protect your hearing. [Canellita]

lol, sorry for bring up an old topic, but this has been bothering me lately. Is it bad if I listen to my ipod for an hour every day when I workout? Thing is the volume is usually at 35% most of the time, and 50% if I feel like getting a little more pumped up. Also earlier my ipods right earphone went out, so I just listened out of the left one for 45 minutes or so. Then I used my brothers earphones after which are a lot louder and have a shitload of bass, for like 10 minutes, before my ears started to ache. Anyone know which one of those could have caused it? [wanderer1]

Yes loud music hurts ears.It also affects all the nerves in the body.Once i went for a function.I suddenly went near the speaker and my ears started paining.Loud music also lets us get headaches and the song tunes keep ringing in the head.I always listen to music at a medium volume which my ears love to hear.Even if i am out in a noisy environment.I will listen to the headphones at a low volume.happyhappy [vicky30]
