I guess this discussion is mainly aimed at "older" myLotians but younger ones feel free to respond if you want (even if you've never heard of some of the music I'm talking about lol!)
Most of us have a few classic albums in our collection like "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac, "Dark Side Of The Moon" by Pink Floyd, "Sgt Pepper" the Beatles ... you get the idea. Do you have a favourite that you still listen to frequently even though it's maybe 30 years old now?
Personally I'm a huge Stones fan so I listen to a lot of their old stuff (and still on vinyl as well!) but apart from them the "golden oldies" I still play a lot are Rod Stewart "Every Picture Tells A Story" and Bad Company "Straight Shooter"

I think anyone who is a big music fan has a decade that they sort of relate too. For me it was the 80's and the new wave synthesized music that came out then. I mostly listen to newer stuff but I'll ocassionally get a little touch of nostalgia and listen to an online 80's station that I really like [inked4life]
True - for me overall it's probably the 70's although there's load of 80's and 90's music I like too. In fact I also like a lot of newer stuff but I can't really get to grips with rap I'm afraid! [Stiletto]
I find this discussion fascinating in the fact that music I grew up with is now being called Golden Oldies. Yet they're only 20/30 years old, I grew up listening to 50's music, rockabilly & blues etc, & that stuff is really old. But the point is, the majority of the music of today just doesn't come close, it has no soul or feeling or even creativity, so I'll take Golden Oldies any day of the week, be it 50's right through to the 80's :) [Jaytech]
Oh I know what you mean about some of the stuff around today - I catch myself sounding exactly like my Granny sometimes when I'm sitting muttering about something having "no tune"! It is a weird feeling when music like that is consigned to the "golden oldies" category - I always associate that tag with 50's music like Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis etc because that's what my parents listened to when I was growing up. [Stiletto]
Hmm..i don't know which category I belong, but I do listen to the 'golden oldies' as you put it..In fact I do love the beatles! i have their songs in my playlists and i love singing and playing songs from the 70s and the 80s. [puchapox]
You definitely belong to the younger category but thanks for responding. My daughter who is a couple of years older than you loves 80's music although she was only born in 1980 so she can't really remember a lot of it the first time round. I'm always surprised by the number of young people that really like the Beatles - I see loads on myLot talking about them. I guess that's a testament to the quality of their songs really. [Stiletto]
Oh I am definately a "golden oldie", and I still listem to the songs of my teenage years (1970's) all the time. I still listen to "Rumours" a lot too, and "Dark Side ofthe Moon". My own special favourite is "Selling England by the Pound" by Genesis. I revised for my O'Levels to the strains of Peter Gabriel singing those immortal starting words, "Can you tell me were my couhtry lies", and I still sing it now, - though only in private as I never could sing. Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane. Oh - and as for Rod Stewart....... I saw him at the Diana concert a few weeks ago, and his live version of "Maggie May" was still better than all the younger srtists could ever perform in my opinion!! [rosie_123]
I realised when I was typing this discussion that I hadn't listened to "Rumours" for years so I'm playing it right now! It still sounds good. You know I was never a huge Rod Stewart fan - I think "Every Picture Tells A Story" is the only one of his albums I've ever owned - but I think he's one of those rare artists that getting older really suits! I agree with you - no-one can sing "Maggie May" like Rod Stewart. [Stiletto]
im only 19 and i appreciate old songs. songs of carpenters, beegees, rod stewart, fra lippo lippi, barry manilow, stevie wonders and others.. [yamskee]
thanks.. try downloading fra lippo lippi songs at multiply.com try beauty and madness or light and shade. ^_^ [yamskee]
I'm a younger person and I listen to all of those bands. I love them, especially the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. My dad brought me up listening to all that music, and I've never gotten away from it. It's better than most of the music that my generation has made. [sonicflood132]
I'm glad you like the Stones. I do think there are some good bands around today but I'm not sure there's many that we'll still be listening to in 30 years time. [Stiletto]
I like listening to oldies. I believe that I inherit that from my dad because when I was little I would hear him listening to oldies, songs from when he was growing up and I liked it. I also listen to music kids my age and younger, older listen to. My radio station plays old music and todays music. My dad still listen to music to old music when he was growing up. [sweetangel88]
I think times have really changed a lot because I used to hate listening to my parents music but there again I guess your dad is probably about the same age as me. [Stiletto]
i listen to a lot of different music but while i like new stuff it seems to wear on my nerves after the radio plays a new song to death so when i make cds i usually end up mixing a lot of the old stuff in, i dont think bands like The stones will ever really go out of style, theres a few really old songs that i love that my husband thinks are hilarious when i listen to them like blueberry hill by fats domino and at last by etta james has to be the best song for a slow dance ever. [caraj444]
I agree with you about "At Last" by Etta James - such a great song and I love her voice. [Stiletto]
You betcha! I love most anything from the 60's, 70's and 80's. The 'music' of today just doesn't do it for me. I hear very little instrumentation and the 'vocals' are basiclly either someone talking or screaming! Some of my favorite oldies are The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Police, Billy Joel, Chicago and more! I've dated myself I know, but that is okay with me! [crazynurse]
I don't mind some of the music around today but I think there's just so little variety - or at least it seems that way to me anyway. I listen to Police quite a lot too - I used to love them. [Stiletto]
I couldn't agree more. I still feel the best music was created from the late 60's, through the 70's to the early 80's. That is why a lot of hits nowadays are remakes of music from the 70's. In those days the words still made sense and the artists really made the music. Today most "music" are completely electronic or you can't make out a word the artist is saying. I am so glad that there are more people who keep the good music alive. [eric8888]
Oh and some of the remakes just make me want to scream! They take a perfectly good song and turn it into some lame electronic dance thing. I'm trying to think of examples but at the moment they're not coming to me but I'm sure you know what I mean. [Stiletto]
I'm an golden oldies fan of music, especially R&B and pop music from Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Michael Jackson, Jackson 5, The Eagles, Abba, Bee Gees, Earth Wind and Fire, Four Tops, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie and the list goes on. [maddysmommy]
Motown, thats the word i was looking for, thanks! [maddysmommy]
I work predominantly younger people, and the noise they listen to is awful...one piece all I understand is the word 'Suicidal' then something about an umbrella and 'party like a rock star' and end up like paris hilton and company. On saturday nighes I work with a gentleman almost my age, he came in one night and I had 'grazing in the grass' playing on my ipod and he sat down to listen and it made him 'feel young again'. A few minutes on the way home from seeing Harry potter, we were talking about Three Dog Night 'brickyard blues' (play something sweet, play something mellow.... These were not even biggies, but so good and how can we ever forget any of the beatle songs, or Rhiannon (did I spell the right). As far as I am concerned, there is little music that came out after the 80's, not none, but not much worth hearing. [Debs_place]
lol I know - I find some current music hard work to listen to and it does just sound like a noise. Oh and you did spell Rhiannon right! [Stiletto]
When I hear "Golden Oldies" I think more of the 50's and 60's than the music you've listed. But I do listen to the bands you listed, as well as the 50's and 60's music. I also listen to 40's music. I like stuff like the Supremes and duwop music as well. [Withoutwings]
My stepdad listened to 50s and 60s when we were kids, so we got to hear that all the time too. [Withoutwings]
I'm a big 80's fan but I do love some of the older stuff. I was born in 1969 so really missed out on the 60's stuff but still appreciate alot of the music back then. Not really into Elvis but I do love some of the 60's stuff! [chileman]
One of my earliest "musical" memories was seeing Elvis on tv in I think '68 or '69. I remember thinking he was pretty cool but my parents liked him so that meant I couldn't possibly admit to liking him too! Even though I was only about 8 or 9 at the time the rebellion was starting to kick in! I freely admit to liking Elvis now although I don't often listen to his music. [Stiletto]
I love the sound trac of American Graffiti. I have the VCR and watch it several times a yr. I listen to the music real often too. Brings back my childhood!Golden Oldies... [barehugs]
American Graffiti - I've not seen that movie for years. Great soundtrack as well which I'm sure I have on CD somewhere. I must dig it out and have a listen. Thanks for the reminder. [Stiletto]
I like to listen to Joe Cocker, Joe Cocker Album. When I visit my Mom. She has the album and a record player. I like to hear it on vinyl, it sounds better. CD just doesn't do it for me. I have alot of albums of the era but no turntable, sure do miss hearing them. I have 8-tracks too, now that's a totally different experience. Peace, Totty [totty1969]
Vinyl really just gives a totally different sound I think. Maybe it's just me being nostalgic because vinyl was all you could get when I was a teenager but I definitely think it sounds better - even with the scratches etc! [Stiletto]
Oh yes I do; I love Motown and I listen to it from time to time when I want to hear something good and upbeat.as well as music from the 60s to now. Sometimes I go back even further depending on what I'm feeling on myself; I guess I am at the age where I can listen to a certain song and remember what I was doing at the particular time. Interesting. [Savvynlady]
Yes I'm the same - it's amazing how a song can transport you back in time. [Stiletto]
I listen to a lot of music from the 70's, 80's and 90's. All my kids know all the words to this music too which I think is great. When we're in the car driving we'll all be singing along to my cd's my hubby made for me. Most of the new sort of music is all about suicide ect so I really don't like it and a lot of songs my daughter listens to has so much swearing in it. They certainly don't make music like the Golden Oldies anymore. As you said the remakes are awful too. Look at Nasty Girl. Its done to the same music as Sugar. [shoelover]
I know - some of the current music is pretty depressing. I think there's room for that kind of stuff but at least some of it could be a bit more "upbeat"! And the swearing just stuns me in some of them - I mean I swear all the time but there's just some things you don't expect to hear in songs! [Stiletto]
I still do listen to most of them, with some from our very own filipino brand of music!;) As for worldly known artist's: I listen to Air Supply mostly from their top rated albums, like their "Greatest Hits album," "The Very Best of Air Supply," and "All Out of Love.. Live!" From Bread, I listen to most of their albums that was very popular during their time. I could still name some more, but I prefer to give way to others for them to get a chance to add a few..=) [raijin]
I've never really listened to Air Supply much although I know a couple of their songs but I'm very familiar with Bread because I have their greatest hits album! You just go ahead and name as many as you want - I don't mind :) [Stiletto]
hahahahahaha i am 16 and i listen to the oldies i love the song missippi river missippi man and i love the rose i love pastie cline dont know if thats how you spell her name tho i love the judds and dolly parten i think im the only girl thats my age that listens to my moms oldies lol or likes the same songs yet sings alonf to them lol [babygirlmd15]
Wow - I'm really surprised at the number of younger people that have responded so far but you're the youngest yet babygirlmd15! I don't like country music much but I do like a couple of Dolly Parton songs. I bet your moms pleased about your taste in music anyway lol! [Stiletto]
I listen to music that spans 4 decades, from the 70s till recent times. Mostly, these are hit songs that make the charts and were popular during their time. Some are golden oldies and many are evergreens. They are really very listenable and one can never forget them even years later, unlike some of today's songs which will be here today and gone tomorrow. Even some of the artistes today won't be around for long. [lexus54]
I think what you say about todays songs and artists is very true. I don't imagine many (if any) of them will be remembered in 30 or 40 years time. [Stiletto]
i love listening to old songs.. i have here the music of spandau ballet, fra lippo lippi, the cascades, evergreen, beatles, kiss, pink floyd, bread of course and other more.. ooops, before i forgot, ABBA of course is one of my favorites.. i just love listening to music, especially the old ones... i just can't explain the feeling everytime i hear old musics.. [Bujoyseth]
Someone else mentioned Fra Lippo Lippi and I've never heard them so am going to look them up. Ooh Abba - who doesn't like Abba? Great songs to sing along too! - by the way is that your baby on your avatar? Gorgeous! [Stiletto]
I listen to Led Zeppelin even though they split up around the time I was born and I like Sandy Denny who died before I was born. The quality of music produced today just isn't as good as it used to be, though it's starting to repeat itself, practically every new band I hear sounds like The Clash. [nancyrowina]
That's true - they do all sound like the Clash don't they or at least pale imitations of them. I quite like Led Zeppelin although I've never been a huge fan. I responded to your discussion about Sandy Denny and I still haven't got round to listening to any of her stuff but I will - although I know the Battle of Evermore of course. [Stiletto]
I love Pink Floyds first album 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn'. Actually I love all their albums but that's my favourite. I've got two versions of it, one is a mono CD that was released for the 30th anniversary of the album 10 years ago, and the other is the standard stereo CD. I love 'Are You Experienced' by The Jimi Hendrix Eperience too. Both those albums were released in 1967. That was a great year for music (not that I was around back then, I wasn't born until 1976). I like a lot of blues music from the 1930's to the 1950's too. Most of the music I love was recorded before I was born. I'm sure 90% or more of the music in my CD collection (I wish I could say record collection but sadly I don't have much vinyl) was recorded before 1975. [crispeater]
I like that concept - you could be right!! [Stiletto]
hi, yeah,i listen to oldies.i am an indian.i am a hindi movie and hindi songs' die-hard fan.i listen to kishor, rafi till now.i love these musi.they are evergreen. Arindam [ARINDAM007]
Hi, I haven't heard of them but I do like a lot of the music from India that I've heard although I couldn't name the artists. Thanks for responding. [Stiletto]
Hi there. Im into oldies too eg; Pink Floyd, Eagles, Dragon, Thin Lizzy, The Police, Australian Crawl, Rolling Stones and a whole lot more... There aint nothing wrong with oldies... [Nardz13]
Hi Nardz13, I know you can't beat some of the golden oldies can you? A lot of the music around today just doesn't compare. Thanks for responding. [Stiletto]
Yes, I remember the Pussycat singing 'Mississippi'. I used to listen to the song while I was a teenager. There are many other songs anbd singers I like, already mentioned by others above. It still brings back memories of my teenage years, playful, sweet and innocent. Some oldies are good as gold and the music never dies. [terry11]
Yes it's true hearing a certain song can take you right back to years before. Thanks for responding terry11 [Stiletto]
Hi Stiletto: I like the Rolling Stones, Beattles and Rod Stewart, (when he is not singing the classics). Ivor [TheSpy]
Please call me Ivor, Stiletto. We agree on him then. [TheSpy]
The one I never get sick of listening to is Engelbert I have never really been a fan of the Stones and that lol my favorite Group was Bay City Rollers but they just do not sound the same now lol [gabs8513]
Hey I loved the Rollers as well!! I still have the half-mast jeans with tartan down the legs that I wore when I was 13 - although even if I was ever tempted to wear them again I don't think I could even fit one leg in them now LOL. [Stiletto]
I really do consider 80's music to be oldies now a days because a lot of oldies rock and roll stations will play music from the 60's,70's, and 80's. I love 80's music but I also love to listen to 50's 60's and 70's music like Chicago,Beetles,Monkies, and the Rolling Stones. I also love music from the 90's and music from 2000 and beyond. 90's music and beyond isn't really that old yet but it will be old someday. [carebears]
True - strange as it seems now another 10 years time and 90's music will be added to the golden oldies category as well. [Stiletto]
Quite often, I end up listening to Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest (I think they're all from your area of the world.), Led Zep, Heart, to name a few. I also listen to a lot of R&B stuff from the 1950's 1960's & even 1970's from Motown Records, Stax Records, & quite a few that were influenced by them. When covered the right way, a lot of album guts that are not really heard much or at all nowadays on oldies formats, make great heavy metal cuts. One that comes to mind is The Temptations' You're My Everything ... it has this Scorpions' No One Like You feel to it. Nowadays, music from the 1980's is now considered oldies. I'm actually listening to Rainbow In THe Dark right now as I type this. I also have most of the albums released by The Scorpions from their 1970's stuff to Unbreakable. There is a lot of good stuff there. It seems that most of the music from the 1990's thru today goes from lacking to just utter junk. You can find a few good treasures there, but they're very few & far in between. [KrazyKlingon]
It seeed that a lot of the Motown music started losing popularity in the USA & gained popularity in Great Britain. That was probably why quite a few of the artists ended up relocating to Great Britain. You also hit another thing. Edwin Starr's "War" was originally a 1970 classic protesting the American involvement in the Vietnam War. I am sure for quite a few American & British, it applies to the Iraq situation. I agree with you. It seems that the stuff spat out by the record companies these days, most of it is not even worth the media it's on. There is some good stuff out there, but most of it is released by DIY Do It Yourself) who have nothing to do with the major labels. Another name for this is Indie music (because it was done independently with no big-time record company executive trying to change the music made by artists in such a way that it gets turned from good stuff to plain old junk. [KrazyKlingon]
I am hopelessly stuck in the 80's! lol! to my surprise I have found that my kids and their friends absolutely love the 80's music as well... today's music just doesn't have the sound or story line that the 80's provided and it seems that even the younger generation sees that too. [elp388]
My daughter loves 80's music too and she was only born in 1980 so can't really remember a lot of it the first time round. She's a big Wham/George Michael fan though! [Stiletto]
I'm a classic rock freak, 70's and 80's mostly but I can go back to the 50's and 60's hit songs and still remember all the words! LOL The band I'm in does mostly 70's and 80's classics but we do some new stuff too. I like a lot of the newer hard rock stuff, Nickelback, Disturbed, Godsmack are some of my favorites. But sometimes I just have to get out my old Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Molly Hatchet, Poison, Whitesnake, Metallica, etc... [craftcatcher]
Oh you can't beat a bit of Led Zeppelin! I don't mind some of the newer stuff but I admit I'm pretty out of touch with what's going on in that area. I'm a bit stuck in the past lol! [Stiletto]
Wow...times are certainly changing. Golden oldies used to mean Elvis and Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis. My favorite music is Sixties British Invasion, starting with the Beatles. I tell people I'm a Sgt. Pepper to Double Live Gonzo kind of guy to describe the era of music I like. I like the Vietnam era music when America shook off its Post WWII blinders and started to see the world and its leaders for what they were... politicans. I'm not political, but I like the politically based music of the late sixties. [ORyansBelt2012]
I know - when I hear the phrase Golden Oldies I think of those people too but let's face it - when we talk about the sixties and seventies we're talking 30 or 40 years ago. Scary thought and guaranteed to make us feel pretty old! [Stiletto]
Frank zappa's "Joe's Garage." Alice Cooper's "Welcome to my Nightmare." Anything by the moody Blues. "Terrepin Station" by the Grateful Dead. "steamboat annie," can you name that group. Damn, I feel old. LOL [cyntrow]
LOL it's ok - I still wouldn't have got it anyway. Heart were only really big here in the UK for a shortish time and I don't know a lot of their music. [Stiletto]
I liked the music from the forties to the end of the Eighties and after that, things started to go down hill. I loved all the old country music, Kenny Rodgers and the First Edition, Fleetwood Mac, The Rolling Stones, The Eagles (favorite of mine is Hotel California --waiting for when they make a movie about that song.), The Animals, Cyndee Lauper -and more that I cannot list now. I loved them all. [suspenseful]
Hi Sweetie: I do like older songs. Much older than you like. I listen to a lot of musicals, both ones on the stage and in movies. Evita by Madonna is one of my favorites. I also like the big bands when people like Frank Sinatra sand with them. My grandpartents loved these so I listened to them when I was younger. Be well until I return. Ivor [TheSpy]
Hi Ivor: I quite like older songs too. I like Frank Sinatra because I grew up hearing that sort of music as my father played it a lot. And I do like musicals - Singing In The Rain is my favourite. I could recite all the dialogue never mind sing all the songs lol! Thanks for taking the time to respond. Hope you're not away too long this time! [Stiletto]
yup i still listen to old jamz marvin gay and james brown and more. [busta1]
