Growing up my mother always wanted me to learn the piano. I never wanted to go and take lessons though. Now that I'm older and wiser I realize that maybe I should have. I always wanted to learn the drums too but never did. Have you ever learned to play an instrument? If you could still learn what would you want to play?

I have played an instrument before and it was the piano. I learned 1 or 2 songs by myself and it was mostly during high school. But as soon as I graduated, I stopped playing the piano and pretty much forget everything I had learned. But if I could pick up a new instrument now, it would have to be the guitar. I know, everyone wants to play the guitar but for me, I would be accomplishing something that I never thought I could. [texasheartland]
I learned playing the guitar during my high school days as part of the curriculum. At first, I thought that it would be very troublesome to bring a guitar to school aside from all the books that I carry everyday. To make a long story short, I enjoyed playing it up to a point where I played Lead Guitar in a band for the whole duration of my college days. Ahh... those were the days. :) [erikssion]
HI I started with a year and a half on the piano when I was around 9 or so. I wanted to keep going, but my parents were done with lessons at that point. I continued to play as I had learned what I needed to keep going alone for awhile. Then as I left home my dad got me my first guitar, I loved it instantly! One reason, I could take it places adn jam with people! I learned so much from wacthing others. I never took lessons, but now twenty years later I play in a group with a drummer, flute, 4 singers and a bass guitar, keyboard, piano . We all have a great time doing it. And....in the last 2 weeks I bought a viola. I was nervous at first becauase I have heard they are hard to learn. In a few minutes I had a simple mary had a little lamb down. The music is written in alto clef, so I am transposing as I go, I dont want to learn a new clef. Still have far to go on it. But I love learning new things. I once tried to learn the mandolin, that was hard for me. So, I hope to keep finding more and more instruments to learn and play. I love music and what it can do for people. Intersting post, I enjoyed it! Jo [1ofgodskids]
You are a very talented person. Very lucky. Keep trying new things. [Shar19]
Yup, when I was in grade school, my aunt enrolled me to a piano lesson so I could learn how to play an organ and piano as well. But unfortunately, I can't keep up my studies and having a piano lesson plus the fact, I always get sick at that time so I have to withdraw my piano lesson.. and now.. I don't even know how to play it anymore… hehehe though I wish I had continued it coz it's nice to know how to play an instrument. ? Cheers! [jesbellaine]
Thanks for your response. [Shar19]
We are not a mucical family when it comes to instruments. I did play the recorder when I was a girl and I did half heartly try to play the guitar but didn't really put much effort into it. Wish I couls play something so we could gig about and sing with the children [Anne18]
My family never played anything either. [Shar19]
I already play guitar and bass, but I wouldn't mind learning any other instruments. When you become a musician your appreciation for music rises as you get better at your own instrument. When I listen to songs now I hear every part of the song and now I want to be able to play every part. I wouldn't mind learning how to play the drums either. [jambi462]
Go ahead, learn how to play the drums. I'm sure you'd do well. [Shar19]
In grade school I took piano and flute lessons. I was never any good at either instrument. I have considered attempting piano lessons again. I don't think I would take the time to practice, so I have not signed up. [Fafner]
It does take a lot of commitment. I think piano would be a little easier to learn. [Shar19]
I played drums and guitar.....but not for years. My daughter is now 38 and taking piano lessons with her daughter and enjoying it very much! She says she can't believe how fast she is learning! It's never too late to do it! [jillhill]
You're right about that. Maybe I should take a lesson with my daughter. Your daughter and I are the same age. [Shar19]
all growing up i had to take piano. i hated piano lessons and having to practise all the time, but now that i'm older, i'm glad that i can play the piano. it's alot of fun and very relaxing. i have an electric piano, but want to get a real piano again. But they are so expensive. i also know how to play the alto saxophone, clarinet, and flute. i want to learn how to play the guitar and harp as well. the next one i'll learn is guitar. i heard it's a lot easier to learn than the harp as well as cheaper. [princessmel]
You're very talented, good for you! I think the harp would be beautiful to learn. [Shar19]
When i was in 2nd and 3rd grade i played the cello in my grade school orchestra but i gave it up to switch to play in the school band. I played the B flat clarinet from 4th grade to 7th grade and then the bass clarinet in 8th grade. i loved it but gave it up when entering high school because i did not want to take part in marching band. however, i always wanted to learn to play guitar but never did, maybe that will be on my list of things to accomplish! [jordankalaher]
Maybe now is the time for you to learn the guitar. Thanks for responding. [Shar19]
I have played a few instruments during my life. When I was young I played the violin for about 4 years, then I stopped. I learned the recorder in school, and made a fife for a project and taught myself to play that but I don't think both of those really count. I played the piano for a while, but could never get the hang of reading music and my teacher refused to play things for me so I could hear them, so I never really progressed and I dropped it. Now I play the guitar (since February) and I already know quite a few songs. I am really happy with the guitar, it's a fun instrument to play. [ThePaintGuru]
It seems the guitar is the instrument most people would pick. [Shar19]
I can play violin, piano and guitar but my family are very muscial and it just was expected of me to play [marym14]
That's very good. I hope that you enjoyed playing those instruments even though your family expected you to learn. [Shar19]
I took piano lessons when I was a child. I played for a couple years, but then I gave it up. My grandmother never took piano lessons, but she plays by ear. I enjoy listening to her when she plays, she is good at it. I can play by ear myself but my grandmother is much better at it than I am. When I was a child I also took flute lessons but I only played for a short time. I would like to learn the guitar. I have a guitar, but I haven't had the chance to play much yet. I would also love to learn the violin. [Porcospino]
I don't play anything but my honey plays the bass. When we go to our friends they have a drum set in the garage and we rock out. [missybear]
Yes! I learned to play guitar to some extent. With that knowledge,I tried playing keyboards too.But I am not familiar with playing chords in a keyboard.Music is just cinema songs for me and I know to play it in guitar and keyboard. Also,I have a flute and I just know to blow it only.Sure, playing with music instruments you can travel in a new world. But I am now away from playing my guitar. Thanks for remembering! [srganesh]
i do play the guitar and am still striving to learn more. I do the lessons by myself with chord charts and its a bit hard. [rj0921]
This is one of the things I never got to learn. I learnt to read music, and had no more than a couple of piano lessons. There is not anybody in my family who can play any instrument so without an example I didn't learn as a child. It would have anyway a great thing being able to play guitar as music brings people together. [overwings]
Ya it's really nice to play the piano. But while i'm grwoing i didn't hold that type of things. On that time they were costliest things for us. [chandu245]
I always wanted to learn to play the Guitar but I never did.*Yet*The only time I played an instrument is when they force us in music class. The only thing I have played in my lifetime would be an Keyboard and a Recorder. [XeroFrozenFs]
I always wanted to be a great music player. I took lessons for guitar and banjo, but found it very hard to learn. Then I bought a casio synthesizer and practiced fingering keyboard. Slowly I learned quite a lot and started playing my favorite songs. I really love it. [cybersoft01]
As my name appears in this site, nadec23, a band from our town and school. We like to play songs that are trend or appealing to the people and that we love to take challenges. I say challenges because we play songs that are difficult to play. I'm their lead guitarist by the way. :) [nadec23]
Well, I didn't have a lot of choice in the matter. My father was a classical conductor and concert pianist, and my mother a successful mezzo soprano before she retired to have kids, so music was a huge part of my life. I learnt piano first, not very well, but then I became a first class french horn player, even asked to audition for a major symphony orchestra. But my best instrument I inherited from my mother, my voice, and I really preferred to follow that path into pop/rock, and later folk and jazz, with some success over the years. As part of that I learned guitar, and got pretty good at that, although there are millions better. At one point I was teaching music in a high school, so I taught myself trumpet as well. Along the way I learned to play mandolin and tenor banjo, neither very well, and electric bass. Lash [grandpa_lash]
yeah, i've learned how to play the piano when i was a kid but i never got the time to practice the lessons i've learned from my instructor.. i wasn't serious about playing the instrument that time as i've more important things to do.. if i could learn a new instrument(s), i'd like to try the guitar, drums and violin.. [gracie04]
I usedto play a piano when i was younger but i stoped and i never got round to playing it again. [Random28]
I have played the clarinet since I was 10. I am 24 now, so 14 years of music for me. I would like to learn the oboe, I think it sounds really nice. [katcool]
Growing up, music was always a big part of my family. My father's was able to appreciate the subtle nuances of key & meter changes, harmonies and chords simply by intently listening to different types of music. My mother sings beautifully. she can harmonize with any song she hears. My Aunt sang and played piano, my uncles played guitar and keyboard. I learned to play the flute. Learning to play music gave me an appreciation for ALL types of music. The downside is that I can't bear the sound of music that isn't played well--it's like nails on a chalkboard. After going through learning to play the flute as a young person I don't find the task of learning to play another instrument all that daunting--other than trying to find the time. I would like to learn to play the violin or the piano. My advice: It is NEVER too late. [LuvBr0wn13s]
I've been playing piano for a few years now, and I'm learning to play electric guitar as well, although I'm not very good. xD I really want to improve from what I already know at piano and get good at guitar too. I don't think I would consider learning to play another instrument altogether, although if I had to make a choice I would probably pick the violin for the way it sounds. =P [Zezloler]
Yes, I play the recorder! I say I play the recorder but I don't actually know how to read music or anything like that! I learned to play by ear! I listen to a tune that I like a few times and suddenly I am able to pick it up. I do know how to play in Irish jig, it's short and fast! I guess it's nice when you have a few others with a guitar and so forth! Andrew [AndrewFreyne]
Yes, when I was younger I also took music lessons. Sad to say the only thing I learned how to play was Old McDonald. I wish that I had learned and stuck with it. I sing and that would have been a lovely combination if I had learned to play well. [agrant10]
i was so like you. i took piano lessons for a year when i was younger and quit after that and had always regretted it. i was fortunate because i got a second chance. a guy that we knew was an awesome piano player and had finished the highest level of schooling in it and he taught me for about 6 months for free and i figured out that i am a better listener to the piano than a player. [cher913]
I once have learned to play harmonicon by myself. So I was not skillful in it! In my opinion there is nothing can match playing an instrument when you are annoyed. But whether you can play it well or not depends on the practice of you. [378144062]
Yes I learned the recorder when I was in primary school and I played in the school band. I thought it was pretty good at the time but it was not an instrument that was used much any more. I tried to learn the flute, the guitar and the organ but I had problems using my left hand with the guitar and the organ and I could not get my mouth right for the flute so I gave up on them. I have not played my recorder for years but I still have it somewhere. [sharra1]
Playing guitar is one of my favorite hobbies especially making my own riffs up. I didn't start out as a musician playing guitar I actually played the drums at first. My dad bought a small set from a friend of his that was in a band, but had upgraded his set. I started out playing Nirvana songs and AC/DC songs because most of them are just simple one-two beats. Soon it began clicking and the ability to do two seperate things at once became possible. To play drums you have to move your hands in different successions as well as both feet, so at first it can be difficult. The challenge and joy of playing the music I loved kept me practicing and eventually I joined a band with some of my close friends. We wrote several of our own songs and started playing free shows at parks and the lead singers house. We decided to make a demo disc so we scrapped together 300 bucks and had 5 songs recorded. Up until this point we all thought we were doing great, but when we tried to sell the demos we realized something horrible. The singer sucked. People finally just came out and told us the music was great, but the singing was awful. See the problem is, when you're playing in a band you really focus on the music more than the singing, so we really didn't notice it until it became evident on the demo. So we broke up and I began playing the guitar. I already had a little knowledge of the basics from the guitarist in the band and from a girlfriend at the time. I just kept building on that and bought scale and chord books and taught myself how to play. Today with the exception of solos I can play pretty much anything and I am working on mastering scales in order to solo. [cadman1]
I took piano lessons for two years, but I was really bad at it. [6precious102]
Thanks for sharing. [Shar19]
Formally, I have never learned to play any instrument. I meant I never go to musical course or study under musical teacher. But I do some self-learning and I have been able to play piano, certainly not classical type - I can't read a musical sheet. Other than piano, I learn to play guitar by myself and then stepped up to play bass. I also take some time to play drum, a simple 8 beat practice and then stepped up to some groovy-funk style, samba, and some swinging style. And now, I am still learning to play Saxophone. I believe I could still learn that! That's why I spent my saving to buy a Saxophone. It's pretty hard to learn since the basic of piano and guitar can't be applied here. [blablablu]
I played the flute when I was in elementary school, but I did not like it. I quit after every other person in my class quit, and I never continued with the instrument. I always wanted to learn how to play the piano. I took a class in college that taught you to play. It was supposed to be for beginers only, but it was a required class for some, so obviously there were mixed levels of talent. I had no experience, and the girl that sat next to me could play the songs on the first day. I also did not know how to read music, so it was a learning experience. By the second class, we had to learn how to play one song. It was very difficult for me to do. By the end of the class, we were playing Bach. I must say that is was a good experience because I learned how to play, but I think it would have been more beneficial if I could have taken my time and really learned the piano.happy [surveytaker29345]
I always wanted to play a musical instrument.I have tried practicing guitar when I was young.I haven't mastered it.I still have the urge to learn playing some instrument.happy [balasri]
Hello Shar. I learned to play the flute and mouthorgan and violin. I got to learn to play these from my elder brother by watching him. I love to play musical instruments. I think that it is because of the influence by my elder brother. But that was when I was young. Now I have not played any one of them because of my new interest in surfing on the Internet and some other reading habits. But once I take it up, I can still play them. [williamjisir]
