Im Looking For New Music - Please Suggest Some Bands For Me That Are Not Top 40

on any of the charts. An example would be Subarban Tragedy - they are a local band who is just starting to make it big. Also the Presets is a good one. Sometimes these bands are the ITunes free download of the week. Maybe it's a band from your area that's just making it big.

Go to this website. You shall love it. http://surl.in/HLMID261252BMRMTGQ [jimrobert]

How about bands from other countries that haven't made it in the States? From Australia, I would recommend "Wolfmother" (70's inspired - hot band right now over here), george (very melodic), grinspoon, Alex Loyd, Little Birdy, The Waif, The Whitlams, Powderfinger. [urbangirl]
Actually I just realize that I have "Woman" by Wolfmother on my ipod as of this weekend. I'm still not sure if I like the song. I may have to listen to it a few times before I can decide for sure. [Withoutwings]

What type of music are you looking for? [juliel]
I've heard of Patti Griffin. I will check the others out. Thanks [Withoutwings]

I enjoy alot of music that is not in the top 40 although I still prefer the old stuff over the new apart from a few artists. So if you don't mind I will name old with new. Santana - absolutely brilliant (not his latest albums though!) Miles Davis - A legend Trilok - Indian jazz Tom Waits - A brilliant artist Paul Weller - Great song writer and musician Corrine Bailey Rae - Excellent song writer and has just made it big in the UK. Loudon Wainwright III - Excellent and often amusing songwriter. The Pogues - Excellent Irish band I hope you will give some a go, they are all excellent artists!! [ItTakesAllSorts]
I'm listening to the Pogues on Myspace as I write this and I will be buying some of their stuff on CD or i-tunes. Thanks for the suggestion. [Withoutwings]

well www.crossfire-radio.com has alot of unsigned new music. [CFREvilMistress]
Thank you I will check it out. [Withoutwings]

I am old now, and have not the slightest idea who are in the top 40. But in my younger days, I really enjoyed Talk Talk. Thanks. [stevew1805h]
My fiance has a Talk Talk album... on vinyl. They're pretty good. thanks [Withoutwings]

Luna is my favorite band, they've been around for ages, several CDs out. But they get no radio play whatsoever. I love their lyrics, very tongue-in-cheek most of the time. A good CD to start with is Penthouse. Let me know what you think! [Myrilia]
I have heard of Luna - I have them on my list to check out actually. When I listen to them I will definately let you know what I think. [Withoutwings]

ramonas, old school punk band awsome [dihearted]
Oh man - you should hear some of the stuff my fiance wants to play... Skinny Puppy... Tu pac... just to name a few. I have vetoed those. I compromised by saying he is allowed to sing "Melt With You" - can't think of who it's by now... maybe Modern English? [Withoutwings]

it's not a band and i don't know if you'll like this song but is put your records on by corinne bailey rae. i use to love that song and i still do! if your a guy, just forget about the song, this song is more for a girl. [blee92]
I actually do like that song - I'm a girl by the way. They play it on VH1 all the time. And you are right - because my boyfriend won't listen to it. [Withoutwings]

Some bands/artists I enjoy are Sleater-Kinney, the Ramones, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Quasi, and Tilly and the Wall. [thecaitycat]
Just checked out Tilly and the Wall and they're great! Thanks for the suggestion. [Withoutwings]

Well most, if not all of the music I love to listen to at home, in the car and on my ipod in the gym is the 80s. I love the 80s best era for music. Pretenders, Fleetwood Mac, Level 42, UB40, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, here are some great choices for you. I can't stand music of today, it's either boy or girl bands or horrid rap. Good luck! [wolfie34]
Thank you. I'm already a huge 80s fan. Everything was better back then :) I love more new wave than 80s pop - but it's all good. Do you know a band called the Beloved? I'm trying to find someone else who remembers them. They had a really good song "Time After Time" ("...you challenge me for no reason - I know that I'm impossible and deceiving - I've seen the signs - you're telling me that you're leaving... time after time ...)" It might be early 90's actually. Oh and Alphaville's "Big in Japan" is another one I love. [Withoutwings]

I love anything from the smashing pumpkins and nirvana Wolfsheim is another good band to look into. [Jemmifire]
I know the first two - I actually went to a Smashing Pumpkins concert when I was fifteen. They were touring with Garbage ... my brothers, my best friend - her sister, and our mothers went. It was mortifying having our moms with us. [Withoutwings]

I would suggest checking out The Weakerthans, who are kinda quiet, boy fronted indie with absolutely incredible lyrics. Also, Oh No! Oh My! is just starting to get some attention, and deservedly. They're whimsical, fun also kinda indie stuff. The underrated blog features a lot of good and, well, underrated artists. Also, if you go to their myspace blog, there are a lot of free mp3s. Good luck! [Aidenfire]
Cool, I love the Weakerthans, I will have to check out Oh No! Oh My! They sound like they would be my kind of music from your description! [draconess]

I'd suggest checking some podcasts, such as KCRW.com's Tune of the Day and Morning Becomes Eclectic. The latter is a series of live broadcasts from KCRW's studios. In the past they've featured a range of groups from Latin rock to alternative rock to pop. You can also listen to their radio streams online. [Idlewild]
I will check those out. Thanks! [Withoutwings]

Edmonton had some good local bands- I liked Murder City Sparrows, and Whitemud Drive. MCS had one song that was popular on local radios, but I don't think they've been played out of province... [draconess]
They're a rock band, with some really catchy guitar riffs and interesting lyrics. [draconess]

You could try BoneCandy or Anna Nalick or Colin Hay [sndcain]
I love Anna Nalick. I will check out the other two. Thanks. [Withoutwings]

If you like filk music, Tom Smith is good. Also there is a local band called Rant and Roar that does pirate music. I also like Tenacious D :) [alluravoice]
I will check them out. Not really into Tenacious D but I'm willing to give the other groups a shot. [Withoutwings]

http://www.blythpower.co.uk/ these are the guys to check out. [steerpyke]
Thanks I'll check them out when I get to a computer with sound and let you know what I think. [Withoutwings]

well i am more into modern music and i like some music in top40 but i have also got good taste in older music. how about queen a great band guns and roses another awesome band travis that is good music U2 another brilliant band [shatman]
Travis are the same - some of their songs are just really dreary. [jend80]

Some great young budding bands from my area are Johhny Sketh and the Dirty Notes, a blend of funk-rock and jam band with a wicked horn section. Ever rocked to the electric violin? They made it on the bill for Jazz Fest agin this year. The newer band is the Morning 40 Federation. They recently proved they have made in the NOLA music scene by appearing on the cover of the OffBeat Magazine and at the House of Blues. Their songs are mostly about drinking and partying, a mix of punk rock and brass band, IMO. The first song on their CD is entitled, "I'm Drinkin' Gin instead of Whisley Tonight." They always open with that song and really rile up the crowd. [TereFaerie]
Sounds great! I will definately check these bands out and I will let you know what I think [Withoutwings]

Corporate Avenger is a great band. They're hard to label...somewhere around rap, metal, punk. They touch on a lot of social and political issues. Here is a fan site to get a sample of some of their music from myspace.com : http://www.myspace.com/tribalavenger Enjoy! [GnosticGoddess]
No problem. I hope you like them. [GnosticGoddess]

Um..how about these? The Mars Volta Coheed & Cambria H.I.M. Sugarcult Three Days Grace Bullet for my Valentine Arctic Monkeys (These guys are a bit offbeat) Crossfade Nightwish The birthday massecre Trapt These were all the ones I could think of which are TOO popular, and a few aren't very well none..but their sounds' are lovely. I hope these help. [xParanoiax]
I have a Mars Volta CD... not sure which. I have seen Coheed and Cambria in concert. I love "Wings of Butterflies" by H.I.M. Sugarcult is in my CD player right now. Love Three Days Grace. Have heard of Arctic Monkeys and they are on my list to check out. Love Trapt. Love Crossfade. Love The Birthday Massacre. I have been wanting to check out Nightwish. I will look into Bullet for my Valentine. I have never heard of them. Thanks [Withoutwings]

I recommend Mariza. I have a discussion about her. Go there and you can know more about the greatest singer in Portugal [chanfrado]
Thanks I will. Does she sing in English or in Portuguese? No problem either way as I like foreign language music. [Withoutwings]

I don't know what type of music you like but I'll suggest the following: Snow Patrol - Irish band..:) Muse - I love them, they have a unique sound Gemma Hayes - Irish singer Nerina Pallot - has some very good songs Jamelia - English R'n'B singer Damien Rice Juliette and the Licks The Scissor Sisters - American band which are big in Europe, I don't think they're big in America. David Kitt Manic Street Preachers Sugababes - One of my fav's The Automatic The Corrs The Kooks [emisle]
Thanks. Love the Killers. I have two of their CDs. [Withoutwings]

My little sister just got me into a band called Kane. I call it "country for country music haters." *wink* It has a country-western/punk feel (if that's possible). I've also been listening to a lot of AFI lately. [shiningfae]
My favorite song by them is called "Luckie Street." [shiningfae]

I'm going to recommend some popular New Mexican bands! The Shins are good, they're originally from Albuquerque, too. They're most popular song is from the Garden State soundtrack. They were also just on Saturday Night Live (the one with Jake Gyllanhaal). I'll also recommend Minus the Bear, they're from Santa Fe/Albuquerque, too. They're really good... along the same lines as Death Cab for Cutie. (and I'm pals with the bassist, which is a plus) ;) I also get a lot of good music recommendations listing to streaming radio on my computer- and it's free too! [ctinabina]
Their website is http://www.minusthebear.com They're out of Seattle now. I went to a show in Albuquerque a few months ago and it was really good. They tour a lot, too so they might be coming over to your neck of the woods. [ctinabina]

Ok I like way out there indie/electronic/synthpop stuff: The Brothers Martin -self titled Styrofoam and Fat Jon - The Same Channel Imogen Heap - anything by her Mark Nicholas - Duchess 33 Leaiahdorus - any The Echoing Green - Any Funkstorung - Fat Camp Feva Glen Phillips - Mt Lemon Edge of Dawn - Deathcab for Cutie - any [clownsundae]

try south border, they're from the philippines, they're songs are popular in their country and the'yre in US now and starting to make it internationally [livecon_1]

The Hours - sort of indie, been compared to Embrace but a lot darker and intense. Mr. Hudson and The Library - Too Late, Too Late is a great song, very imediate, sounded like it could be a new one from Pete Doherty (if he'd got back with Carl and back on top form) the first time I heard it. http://www.myspace.com/mrhudson The View Jamie T older bands The Libertines / Babyshambles Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros The Levellers Billy Bragg [jend80]
I've always been curious about Babyshambles. They're always in celebrity news magazines because Kate Moss is dating (married?) one of the band members. [ctinabina]

I've been discovering a lot of new bands I love recently by listening to free radio online at www.aol.ca/radio . There's dozens of genres/stations to pick from, no advertisements or commercial breaks. I personally love the indie and emo stations, they play a mix of bands I already love and great new bands I've never heard of. [draconess]
those stations are great (if they're the same as the main radio aol), The Indie rock mix station was fantastic. [jend80]

Don't know if you'll care for any of these guys, but I listen to a lot of Industrial music....the real hardcore stuff would be Skinny Puppy, Hocico or Wumpscut...others that are a little more accessible and even catchy are VNV Nation, Imperative Reaction and Covenant http://www.myspce.com/vnvnation (listen to Perpetual) http://www.myspace.com/imperativereaction (listen to Judas) good luck [inked4life]
Thanks - I already love most of that stuff :) [Withoutwings]
