Listening To Music, Lyrics Drive Your Attention First Or The Music

i am a music junkie rasp i listen to any song the music catches me first, i observe the progression of the song and the different instruments in the song, i don't listen to hip hop or trance music much coz to me there is nothing much of musicality as there is in jazz/blues/rock/metal .. maybe i am more interested in these coz i play drums, and the lyrics of the song catches my attention after the music, what about you guys? pay more attention to the lyrics or like to listen to the music, some songs are a great combination of both.. i have also got songs of bands like avial, a tamil band, i don't understand the lyrics but the band is awesome! i see creativity in such bands, there are various other bands which i may not understand but the music!

The music,of course.Because it's hard for us to recognize the lyrics of the new songs now. [historydog]
guess you are right, our instinct is to react to the music first. [voldrox]

Being a person who studied music before, I guess the first thing that catches my attention would be the music. I don't really know why, but a song with great music but lousy lyrics can still warrant my attention but a song with lousy music but great lyrics wouldn't be able to. I reckon this is because we need the music to enable us to appreciate the lyrics, so if we don't have the music we're not going to appreciate the lyrics anyway. Like people always say "Music is an international language", and I feel this is so true. We can see people from different races, background and beliefs all come together to appreciate music, especially during concerts or international music festivals. Lyrics can only do so much, but music penetrates the heart and soul like no other.....cool [gerald_lian]
that was interesting to go through friend, yes you are right, music touches many. some songs might be having good lyrics but might not catch our attention. [voldrox]

I think music is the first to attract my attention to the song. Because I am not such a big fan of hard rock, trance or hip hop music, (I think I am more towards pop genre), thus if the introduction of the song is too much for me to handle, I will just give that piece a miss. But definitely lyrics is as meaningful and so is the singer's vocal. Because these are all the things that makes the song attractive to me. If the vocalist is unable to project out the emotions of the lyrics or if the lyrics don't really voice out the music's theme, I might not be attracted to the song. [warvial]
Yes, lyrics plays a big part as well as the music. There was once that I heard this song initially which didn't really impress me because the vocalist didn't really sound right for that song. (It was a rock chinese song but it was a lady singing it and thus at that time, it just doesn't make me paid that much attention.) Until one day, I was watching a drama serial, when I heard the song all over again. And this time round, it brings out a different feeling. I actually liked that song and when I was looking at the lyrics, I finally understood why they choose the lady to sing that song because it was something like a parting ways between a couple and the lady was singing it for the guy who left her (the lady who sang the song happened to be the actress in the drama serial as well) and thus that song is their theme song. Thus, a song can also catch my attention if there is a story related to it. And thus, music videos or dramas using the song also plays a big part for me to bring the song to my attention. [warvial]

Hello voldrox, I listen with my heart...it's the melodywub I appreciate songs from other countries eventhu i don't understand the lyrics,...by listening to it's melody. I had this favorite song from a friend in Tamil..."EN SWASAKAATRE" The very first time i listen to this song...i really feel in love with it. While listening to that song...with my eyes closed,i feel like,i am wandering from the other dimension... The instrument used...the singer's voice, everything in harmony. I like love songs, mellow touch and country songs... My favorite singer is Barry Manilow...and Jim Brickman. I like their songs and compositions...i can relate with it,and i could live with their lyricscheering [jaiho2009]
wow, your son plays guitar and daughter flute, great! my brother plays guitar :).. wish your son gets to play drums and he will happy .. they must be rocking. niceday [voldrox]

Hi Voldrox! Im also a music junkie and I like any music with a good beat. I should've been a drummer lol, but my brother beat me to it!! Im bad with lyrics, I never remember them and I always forget the tittle of a song or who's playing, so Ive learned to deal with it and the secret is to have someone close to you who's into music also and pays attention to the tittle wink [MagicalBubbles]
hi magicbubbles, you can still play drums! happy it's never too late, your brother plays them? yeah i am no good with lyrics too lol, if there is something really catchy then it could ring in my head lol.. [voldrox]

The music/melody definatley catches my atention first. A song has to have a nicley composed meleody that is perfectley tuned up and with an eq balanced. The lyrics can either make a music better or completley wreck a song. there is no middle term so either the lyrics are nicley writtin and sung in tones compatible with the melody or the song is a bust.. [universe2o6]
well said my friend, i agree. lyrics build up the meaning of the song and music is the whole structure of the song. [voldrox]

Hi voldrox.Well I am quite the opposite to you.I am kind of more interested in the melody of the song which lies in the singing. And I dont think you can find it in rock, metal and so on.Though it is not necessary that I will catch the lyrics first but except for piano I dont like to listen to instrumentals.I love listening to pop.Anyways have a nice day .. --sleepshamessleep-- [Shames]
shames i guess you are relate yourself more to the meaning of the song and the melody of the vocals, lyrics dominate in pop i guess, anyways.. yeah i like the piano too, gives the song a different taste, have a nice day you too. niceday [voldrox]

Music is a good way to relax us ,i like it. [lovagepp]
it definitely is lovagepp, nice day. niceday [voldrox]

Hello my friend happy It all depends on the song, lately it seems to take me a few listens in oder to understand what the lyrics really mean, when I was younger it was easy but now I forget them so fast that I have to listen over/over to understand lol kinda sucks but hey such is life, if someone tells me about a song then I have a better idea what I am listening too, great question/discussion. Smoochessss [kitty42]
hi kitty, even i am the same, i can't remember the lyrics soon lol well i think i am more inclined towards the music coz i like to play drums i don't know, anyways how is it going there? will you come online more frequent now ? .. good day. niceday [voldrox]

hi.. personally i love music... for me.. music catches first my attention because it speaks more than the lyrics (if your know what i mean?).. melodies come alive and it creates a perfect harmony.. Music or Melody has a wide interpretation the you are freely to express the way you understand.. While lyrics has its limited interpretation because the composer give its though already! "So what catches first my attention?" is the MUSIC... [gyn0007]
yes gyn0007 same with me :) the music catches my attention first, the lyrics bring out the meaning out of the song, the first time i listen to any song, if i happen to like it is mostly coz of the music and i begin to listen to it again and then sometime later would pay attention to the lyrics of the song. lol .. good day.niceday [voldrox]

It is definitely the music that moves me to like it or not. When I listen to mainstream radio stations it seems that the music is bland and perhaps more lyrically driven. I listen to a nation wide alternative station that plays all different types of musical genres, but they are more artistic in their music and not commercially driven. happy I like a song that can move me either physically or emotionally. I prefer songs that start out slow and then build up momentum as they go. One by Metallica and Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin are two well known songs that come to mind right now that do this well. It is interesting when listening to one of my favourite bands Pink Floyd. One songwriter, Dave Gilmour was into the music and wrote long songs with amazing changes in the tempo throughout. Roger Waters wrote more from a lyrical viewpoint and his songs were the short ones and some that were not so appealing to me. The Wall album was almost totally his work and there are a lot of songs on that album that I do not like, although I quite like listening to the album as a whole instead of just a few songs here and there. Pink Floyd albums do not do well on shuffle! lol [RawBill1]
have fun my friend hope you enjoy them. happy and yeah they have got some really deep meaning songs. [voldrox]

It's very obvious Voldrox that you love music a lot and you play drums, too...It's all in your avatar. I am the kind of person who loves music as well but I am not into lyrics, I am more on the rhythm of the song. But there are also some song that I like that even though the rhythm is good but the lyrics is not good..then I would not like that either. It would gain much of my attention if both are good..the rhythm and the lyrics.happyhappy [joannaleed]
hi, hehe umm yeah i do play drums rasp one obvious reason why the music drives my attention, yeah but good lyrics matter too, i don't seem to pay much attention to the lyrics when i listen to some new song but yeah i wish the lyrics are reasonably good if not very good, good music + good lyrics rock! ... good day. niceday [voldrox]

for me too its music first. i listen to the guitar most avidly because i'm crazy about the instrument and i play it too(though i'm still learning to play on my own). lyrics, of course, catch up later. even i don't listen to hip hop, trance, etc, kind of music. i listen mostly to rock music as a whole. [junil_jk]
hi there, keep up the good work you will rock! .. even i learned playing drums mostly on my own and then i used to follow some of the video tutorials, the weak point about learning drums is that it is huge and noisy! anyways .. i guess you find nothing interesting in hip hop, trance and all kinds of music, even me!... good day. niceday [voldrox]

This is a good question. What catches my attention first is the music itself. When I like the music I will then listen closely to the lyrics to see if it's also good. If the lyrics are not good, I don't bother with that music anymore. Even though the quality of the music catches my attention first, for me the music and the lyrics should both be good. [angelajoy]
definitely what most of would love, good music and good lyrics, well music catches our attention first, if i find the music very good i like to listen to it, i listen to some of the psychedelic rock, i don't pay attention to all the lyrics but i do love the musicality, one example i listen to porcupine tree.. anyways lyrics make out the meaning of the song and is also equally important, good day. niceday [voldrox]

The music first and as the beginning of almost each songs starts with Music and if that music is not ear friendly then who will listen to the words!!! [esjosh]
yup.. you are right, that does catch our attention but i have to wonder there are some songs i don't care to know the meaning of the song, the music drives me crazy. lol.. anyways, good day. niceday [voldrox]

i like to listen to the music, i never really pay attendtion to the lyrics.. but i think i should sometimes.. if the song has a good melody and its catchy i love it no matter what it saids.than as time passes by and i realize what the song reallly means i laugh at myself, most songs these day dont have much morals [H3idimich3ll3]
hehe.. similar to me, i don't pay much attention to the lyrics, not much really when i listen to a new song, the music catches my attention, yeah it could be funny if the song meant something we were not expecting.lol .. good day. niceday [voldrox]

Hi voldrox, How are you? How is your studies?niceday The first attention should be on music but I will listen the lyrics toocheering. You know in our native language there are so many meaningful old songs and all are much popular. The music and lyrics are equally attractive. Now I doubt those kinds of beautiful songs are coming out now. I really love melodies especially the songs in 80s. [Sreekala]
thanks! happyniceday [voldrox]

Definitely the music, every time. Get the right beat, the right sound and the music can take you away. [recycledgoth]
yup, you are right friend. nice day. niceday [voldrox]

I think it's always the tune and the melody that catches my attention first, cause usually you won't understand the lyrics that well, not unless you listen to the song intently, or not unless you're reading the lyrics while the song is playing. Hehehe. So if the melody is nice, then I would definitely check out the lyrics if its also nice. If it's not, then I'll still listen to it, I won't mind the lyrics. Hehehe. But if the lyrics is as good as the melody, then definitely it would go directly to my ipod. [Ingkingderders]
Yup, it's interesting that a lot of people do the same thing. I thought that there were some who listens to the lyrics first. But i guess I'm wrong. happy [Ingkingderders]

Music 1st... but some songs are nice even without the music.. [vlws123]
the credits should go to the vocals in that case friend, good day. niceday [voldrox]

well gud morning ma sweet frnd :P :P well i dont really go into the lyrics... if d music is gud and beats makin me high.. den whateva mayb the language i m gonna listen to it until i get over it. ... or d music makes me sick. .. lately i have been listening to avial - nada nada.. . donna weat dat means ... but theres a sudden energy in the song that keeps me kickin .... and i love it :):) MUSic is wat i value more than lyrics... happy mylotting :) [reneezoso]
hi renee, same with me, i love that song too :) the music beats it out right?! happy mylotting you too. good day. niceday [voldrox]

Usually I'm catched by music instead of lyricshappyI prefer soft and gentle melody. And it always move me deeply. When I listen to them, I'm attracted by melody. In another word, sometimes it's a little difficult to catch lyrics.happy [OrangJuice]
it is the same with me and with most of us i guess, each of us have a different taste, lyrics we usually catch later after the music has got our attention. good day. niceday [voldrox]

I pay a lot of attention to the lyrics, but I like a variety of music, too. I like music from the 40s some, 50s the most, 60s some and then after that, not as much. I like some rock, some country, some blue grass, some jazz, some blues, but no metal unless I'm really, really angry about somethingand I'd like to do something drastic. I think Spike Jones is a riot, and some of the others that write funny stuff to music is a lot of fun. [writersedge]
interesting selection writersedge, some metal songs are like an outlet for the emotion especially anger, lyrics build up the meaning the song and music forms the structure of the song. good day. niceday [voldrox]

I enjoy electronica and trance style music,IDM, down-tempo, trip-hop and anything related to that because the music is generally pretty awesome. It takes a pretty good electronic artist for me to listen to them because I'm also a really big fan of metal. When it's a metal band that I'm listening to or a band that has a vocalist then the lyrics have to be good or I generally can't listen to the band. There are way too many bands out there that have good music but there singer completely ruins it. [jambi462]
hi jambi426 i generally don't listen to much of electronica and trance but i have to agree there are some pretty awesome songs out there and they make me wanna listen to it repeatedly, a sort of transition from one phase to another, now metal well yes you are right, the singer is important coz metal bands can be all good but the vocalist has to keep up as well. good day. niceday [voldrox]

Hi voldrox, I am a fellow music junkie too. I have often thought about this myself, and what makes me attracted to a particular song, especially one I have heard for the first time. As not all music has lyrics (instrumental and classical anyway), for me it's the tune first, then the beat, then the lyrics. I think most of the time I am not really paying that much attention to the lyrics used and what they are, or if they have any particular significance to me. Fiona. [fmpisces]
hi Fiona, when i listen to a new song, i don't know why i tend to like the ones with a little higher tempo i mean i tend not to like slow songs but yes it mostly happens the first time, i may like it the next time i pay more attention to it, yes the tune is very important and then comes the beat, it could either be slow or fast, the beat also gives the song a sort of a structure, even me, most of the time i don't pay much attention to the lyrics but i really begin to like the song quite much i would google it in out and see, good day. niceday [voldrox]

Music with good melody, beat and rhythm catches my attention but still, I pay more attention to the lyrics of the song. :) I love songs with good lyrics. Those lyrics that I can relate to. Sometime I feel that those songs are made for me. :)) [charmeyn]
hi charmeyn, nice to know, well some people love songs which they can relate themselves to, i don't have such many songs which i could think of but yeah it is true we would be listening to such songs so often, there was some song i liked for it's lyrics and i put it on repeat and don't know how many times it played. happy .. well that is not the case most of the time, anyways have fun :) .. good day. niceday [voldrox]

I gotta say that the melody catches my attention first, and then that would lead me to listen to the lyrics very well. I like the song if it's beautiful both in the rhythm/melody and lyrics. happy [mjcookie]
hi mjcookie, it was what most of us love, a good song with good music and nice lyrics happy i tend not to pay much attention to the lyrics when i listen to some song for the first time but if i begin to like it the next time i would dig in :) and there are some songs where i love the music but don't understand the language i still listen to them. happy .. good day. niceday [voldrox]

I'm a drummer myself, but I've always been attracted to music by the lyrics first. I don't really care for much music unless it tells a story or is something I can be inspired by or relate to. I didn't really start to appreciate the actual form or progressions of music until I studied theory and jazz in college. [lindsiko]
You're right! Jazz can definitely be complicated. I've never been into rock too much. I guess that's kind of my downfall as a percussionist. :) Doyou play with single or double bass? I've always liked my kit to be really simple. [lindsiko]

in the past, i'd prefer to the music because of the lyrics. sometimes the sad lyrics attrace me a lot. really very strange, now when i think of it. mostly attracted first by the rhythm now. beautiful melody is a great joy of life. [yolanda19191]
hehe, that's good. orelse i'll always think i'm strange, like lisenting to sad musics. [yolanda19191]

For me it is the music that grabs my attention, the rhythm and the instruments used, then once I get familiar with the song and it grows on me, I start reading into the lyrics, some lyrics can be really profound, others are just vacuous and meaningless. My genre is pop music, mainly from the 80s. I like to learn the words off by heart as well because I find that when I get 'blue' I can sing my favourite song (providing no one is in the room with me!) I can't sing for toffee so I would never subject my awful voice onto anyone. Music is a wonderful soother, stress release and a comforter especially in times of 'depression' and 'melancholy' [wolfie34]
hi wolfie34, 80s pop are great to listen to, although i don't much listen to them i can say they have something different in them, it would be great to be able to know the lyrics and sing along with your favourite tracks, i too do it when no one is around hehe, or sometimes if i am excited about something i could be singing in the bathroom as well.lol, when i listen to some song for the first time i tend to catch the progression of the instruments, especially drums and bass, these two instruments i am particular about when listening to a song that interests me and then comes the lyrics, and if i find i can relate the song to myself somehow then it is pretty cool but it doesn't happen often, music is attracts most of us i guess :) .. anyways, have a good day. niceday [voldrox]

Usually the music first. That makes me a sucker for catchy rythms, but hey, everyone starts somewhere. If i like the song enough, i might get around to search for the lyrics (and/or translations). Usually, the songs i choose this way has a certain sense of beauty and poignant notes about them. [Gunbazca]

also, music first. The melody of the song is the one catches my attention then after that, I'll listen to the lyrics. [acebite89]

The music will most certainly catch my attention first. Sometimes, I just enjoy the music without giving much care about the lyrics. It's the music that makes me want to listen to a song several times. The lyrics, however, are secondary. [myzire72]
