Well in 18 more days, I will reach the half century mark...and I'm starting to think about things like senility, nursing homes, heart attacks...all those really COOL things you can look forward to as you get older.doh
And so, I started thinking...being as it is a whole new generation of people getting old, can we expect to someday soon hear the soothing strains of Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden and others of that genre wafting through the corridors of the retirement homes?
I mean...I may be getting older, but I still like to ROCK!!! And they DO call it a "rocking" chair...so can I ROCK as I rock? Or am I gonna have to get used to Lawrence Welk?confused
Oh, the things that keep me awake at night...lol

you are not getting that old lamb. but i like the idea of heavy metal in retirement homes... [jb78000]
I dont know that music, but I will return to this discussion after I've heard a few of them. :) In the meanwhile, let me wish you Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Many Happy And Healthy Returns Of The Day in advance. :) [vandana7]
I dont really know which music would be classified as Rock or metallic. :) But what I do know is I liked old songs by Barbara Striesand (I think it was in Funny Girl), and Julie Andrews (I love her voice), and then Abba, Boney M, Diana Ross, Backstreet Boys, Westlife, Shania Twain, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Madonna etc. Of these who would qualify, please let me know. I dont enjoy Michael Jackson's numbers, never did. Would that be Rock or Metallick. [vandana7]
Hey, Lamb, it's just a number. I'm 57, and I still love listening to Cliff Richard. Oh, perhaps that's not you want to hear, but while you still maintain an interest in boobies, you are definitely not old. I'm not really interested in boobies, but it doesn't mean I'm old, it just means I prefer a nice firm male butt. Is your butt nice and firm? Just asking! [Sandra1952]
How much time have you got, Alice? 'Lucky Lips,' 'We Don't Talk Anymore,' 'Carrie,' 'Living Doll,' 'Constantly,' 'Miss You Nights,' 'Move It' - that's enough of a Cliff tutorial to be going on with. [Sandra1952]
I guess you'll be starting the wave then Mike? [gitfiddleplayer]
I think you might be on to something there. My ex-husband was about your age, and he likes Metallica, AC/DC and all that crap ... erm, I mean music.rasp I think that the "old timers music" of today will be replaced with that kind of music in the future. It would be really funny if eventually the kids of the next generation are the ones that have to yell at their grandparents and tell them to turn down the music!lol [purplealabaster]
Alice, if telling your kids to turn down the music means you're getting old, then I got old at twenty four and by the way I'm now twenty seven. Can't stand loud music, that's why I think I'll still have the hearing ability of a wolf at 70years... [nefritite]
That is when you take your entire collection with ya and break into the sound system in the old folks home to 'fix' it. I intend on listening to my classics till the day I die. [blackbriar]
Count yourself lucky to reach that 'golden age'. In this age of disease laden society, many have short lifespan and expire before the due date. It may mean slowing down but doesn't mean you can't rock even if it only mean rocking in a rocking chair watching the sunset. Do not assume that aging equals incompetence but feel great to be a seasoned man. Life begins at 50 for some. lolwink [zandi458]
... and for some others too winkwhistle [mysdianait]
Ahhhh I see you're a metalhead. Anyhow, I am 55 and have had these types of thoughts for awhile now. I would think there will still be the typical "elevator muzak" playing at homes, hospitals etc. But the metal of the 70's and 80's would be great. I keep telling my wife if I get wheelchair bound she'd better make mine with a large motor so I can cruise the streets at about 30MPH. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~ R O C K O N !!! [webeishere]
ooooohhh! cruisin'. [bunnybon7]
Oh Lamb have you not heard that you are only as old as you feel But when you find this awesome Retiring Home make sure you let me know ok [gabs8513]
lol Lamb I still say one feel only [gabs8513]
I refuse to believe that one can be too old to rock. If I am carted off to the old folks home I am taking Nickelback and all like them with me. Should anyone object they are free to remove their hearing aids! [jewels49]
Ha your birthday is a week before mine. Shouldn't you be a goat instead of a lamb? Lawrence Welk was the previous generation. You only have to like him if you want to. Rock on!!! [dawnald]
how about a piano? [dawnald]
You are not getting old. You are just older... This should be the best time in your life. If you have kids, they should be alot older now and almost on their own. Rock on! Travel the world! Don't think nursing homes. That's for sick people. Take care of your health. Have a great time. Enjoy your life! I'm happy for you! Celebrate! [carmenvj]
You are never too old for Rock n' Roll. [rogue13xmen13]
Just have that picture in my head now, with all the old timers with their walkers in the mosh pit lol [thezone]
Who on earth is Lawrence Welk lol. I know what you mean. It seems that no matter what era we are in the old people in the homes tend to sing stuff from decades ago. I don't even know any really, really old songs now so why should I be expected to sing "Roll Out the Barrel" when I get to 96 or whatever? You could start a revolution in the homes Lamby and get "Creeping Death" played on a loop!:-)"Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zepp may be more appropriate though. [Janey1966]
i don't think 50 is too old and wouldn't think that many people are 50 in a nurseing home. if you hit 80 you will probably not want to rock as you might break a hip. thats nurseing home age in my book. [elmiko]
Well Lamb I passed your age twenty-three and a half years ago, and I'm STILL not thinking about a retirement home. Who knows, by the time you reach that stage, there will probably be a whole new world of music and you will consider the ones you love so much to be old hat. In the distant future we are thinking about, there will most likely be a whole new world of ways to listen to music - no wires, just press a button and whatever you want is programmed straight to your ears (if you are not deaf by then) for your enjoyment only. Everyone rocking away (provided they still have rocking chairs) will have their own brand of music playing and no one will be disturbed by anyone else's. Realistically, the way many governments are now thinking, it is more likely that at a certain age everyone will be "released" so there will be no need to think about retirement homes at all. [cloudwatcher]
Ah crap, I do everything backwards! I reached the half century mark, looked behind me, took stock, and went back to college. What the heck was I thinking? Don't worry about the Lawrence Welk thing...I hear they have medication for that now. I also don't know much about iron maiden - I threw away my push up bra years ago! Young at heart; other parts slightly older, Malamar [malamar]
Yeah, I would like it too... if it wasn't so, uhmm... freakin' true!blush [malamar]
Just a thought...why don't you start up your own retirement home NOW so that by the time you're old enough you can check yourself in and by that time you will have established your own choices of music within the home. This could catch on! You could start a home for rock stars. Better still, they could entertain you in the home lol. Go on tour! [Janey1966]
Hi MYJL, OMG!!! I just got this image in my head seeing you in the rocking chair, head banging to Iron Maiden and some of the residents clad in leather jacket trying to head bang till their false teeth rattled, lol, what a sight, what a genreation oldies with Roak Band playing in the back ground, you'll never get old Mykl.shocked Tamara [tamarafireheart]
Maybe you should try counting sheep, or old rock and roll musicians instewad of worrying lol Then put some nice Lawrence Welk music in your head and the world will seem fine [fwidman]
I can see myself and most of my friends still rocking in the rocking chairs. I think no matter how old you get the metal just kind of stays in your blood. Though I must admit it has been awhile since I have been to a concertsurrender [thezone]
Time to slow down, take a deep breath and put away your heavy metal. You'll benefit more from listening to Bing Crosby in your rocking chair wearing a comfy cardigan while you keep your feet warm in a nice fluffy pair of foot warmers. Age will catch us all so you're not alone. [faeryoftheshire1]
This painted SUCH a funny picture in my head. I can see you and my brother...rocking...and ROCKING! LOL [Irishfrndly65]
;looks on with adoring eyes; sigh............... [Irishfrndly65]
Oh, finally we have something in common!! lol Although, I'm not old like that but, I rarely find anyone among my thrasher friends that like Megadeth. I can imagine that you will end up having to listen to polka...sorry [ZephyrSun]
Could be. To be honest most of the music I've heard played at the nursing home is whatever the nursing aide working that hall has turned it to and it usually depends on that aides age and musical taste so you might walk into a 90 year old womans room listening to some gangsta rap. [cupkitties]
Hey Lamby Baby You Sexy Thang! If you are getting ready to turn that half century number and you look and act like you do let me at ya honey! I've been there now for 7 years and I can tell ya that age is but a number and I don't give a phuck what anyone says! I rock to what I want to rock to, I hop to what I want to hip hop to, I do whatever I want to do and let anyone try and stop me! I can still dance and get down almost like I did when I was in my 20's, ok maybe 30's! I will challenge any 20 or 30 year old beotch to try to keep up with me! I can still shake it like Shakire(well almost) get down like Beyonce (maybe not get right back up) but will put on a show and leave the men gasping! Care to see an example of my prowess???? Grrrrrrrrrrr......wubraspw00t [Opal26]
...Hi there, The_Lamb_Lies_Down, I want to live until I die. My only wish about dying is that I wake up dead. I figure I have had enough pain while living I don't need any dying pain to leave here. Whenever I get moody and wonder why I am here or whatever, I think about people like George Bush senior, jumping out of planes at 85 or whatever. Like Ted Kennedy, going out sailing as he knew he was dying, not being able to talk so he yodeled and told his son, that was the best he could do, and he did it. Taking advantage of every moment of life he had left. People like Grandma Moses and Picasso who painted late in life, if you are breathing there is still a lot of living to do as they say somewhere. You are in charge of your life, listen to the music you want. In 18 days or so, not much will change, but decide what you want to experience and do it. Try to stay as healthy of mind and body as you can, and then go and kick the heck out of the future. If tomorrow were your last day here what would you want to do, decide and do it, because who knows? Be as happy as you can. Take care. Worrying is not the answer, living is, life is what happens as we are living. The sun is still beautiful to see each day and the moon at night. [artistry]
Well, Lamby..like they say, rock never die! LOL...so rock on and have a jolly good time. I'm so going to enjoy my time when I'm old, that's for sure. But certain things, I will try and tone down..but not the music genre though, lol.. [zed_k4]
yeah, some things used to keep me awake at night before and now it is some other things.a sure-shot sign of getting oldd!!! [riyasam]
Hey Lamb, I am not far behind you! I have often wondered whether we oldies will be rocking out somewhere as we soak our false teeth in a glass...Nope, I am not getting old, I refuse to! I think young; I cannot possibly become one of those old people. I do fear that I am going senile already though. It's a state of mind and all that...Isn't it? [paula27661]
It's a state of mind I guess. I am 46 as of this year and I am not thinking that I will stop rocking out just because I am getting older. I might have to grow up in some ways, but this isn't one of them. I love and appreciate music more now that I am older than when I did when I was younger. I love all kinds of music, just about, but I am, at heart, a rock and roll baby........ We might not be going to any of their concerts, but the music they all made is still great and we can listen to it till we die. In fact, even my kids listen to a lot of what I listened to when I was growing up and they are all grown up. Now to get the grandkids into it because, well, they deserve to know what real music is all about!! haha, have a great day!! [ddhawkins63]
Yes, an interesting concept. I have gone through the 50 barrier over 10 years ago, but I still listen to modern pop music as well as that from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Although I have had a mild heart attack 3 years ago, I can't say that I feel any different now that I am getting older. As an ex musician myself, I can't ever imagine myself not liking any age of music. happy - Derek [derek_a]
I play keyboards and used to sing have played in jazz trios (piano, bass and drums), I have played with bigger soul bands and rock bands, and even old fashioned dance bands. I have enjoyed playing all the music, but if I am honest, my favourite was with the jazz trios, as there was a lot of improvisation and jammin' around. happy - Derek [derek_a]
This is a great discussion! I can see it going on and on. A bit like Mick Jagger ... blink You're dead right - it's already happening. Jazz clubs in the UK are seen as old fashioned, but that's because of trad bands. Trad jazz was pop music during the days of the mods and rockers. While some were dancing underground to Acker Bilk, others were gettin' funked up to Weather Report and acid jazz. (Yeah!) Whenever I start getting lardy about some old gitdoing 29 in a Rover in front of me, I think, "Yeah, but when he was young he was dancing to the STONES!" Worth remembering in 50 plus classes, that one, rather than getting the Glenn Miller out. Again. Actually, do you know who's dancing to the 1940s Big Band Swing sound now in London? Hip twenty-somehing students, that's who! I can't be one of them, unfortunately - I passed you some 18 months ago ...whistle [jazzsue58]
happyGetting old at 50? Never!!I feel younger and younger with every birthday. So you a Capricorn? me too. Your B'day on 6th? Mine on 14th. Capricornians have independent, 'rock'like character, they say. That's why you are so fond of "rock"?lol [tingtong]
LOL I hate Lawrence Welk. Those bubbles are annoying. I'm only 48 and I assure you I will never willingly watch his show. [TheCatLady]
Well, I rounded 57 this past august and would hope for something more 60's-70's, personally, with a wider range of rock, country and such..Even Strauss..I love waltzes! That's the closest my mother could get me to liking classical music. Insofar as the nursing home, should I ever see such (claims are that SSI will be broke in 5 years, so when I come up for payoff there won't be any..AAAH, the story of my life!)..I'd be afraid to be stuck with next generation music (like at work) that the folks running and staffing the place like..In a somewhat gestapo like atmosphere..goose-stepping to the potty..with new age rumbling in the background.. [greenfeathers]
Your too young to think about those thing, my friend. No one will prevent us from getting older just let it happen...Well, rock is really great to listening in. There is no old or young being wanted about rock. There are many people listening about this kind of music...rock with Bonjovi, my friend I like it! [aerous]
Woohooo lamb! Soon to be over the hill aih? You're never too old to rock 'n' roll, they say life begins at 40 but at 50 you're well in the throes of it! hehe I've thought of those eldery things too, but just briefly! I've never heard of Lawrence Welk, but I do like the idea of rocking as you rock If you've still got teeth maybe you can suck on a stick of rock too rasp Alice happy [Aliceinwebland]
ROFL lol I'll send you an old set of my stepdads, i'm sure mum has them in a jar somewhere lol [Aliceinwebland]
Retirement homes will probably have rock "elevator music". Sometimes in elevators you hear Beatles songs and other rock tunes. I imagine that is what will be in retirement homes eventually, rock songs that are turned into orchestra music with lots of strings and made much "lighter". I don't know how else to discribe it. I don't think I could ever get used to Lawrence Welk. [cerebellum]
Happy Birthday. Maybe they might even play some black sabbath in the hearse on your way to the funeral in your honor [palestranger]
I would listen to most music in an old folks' home BUT not heavy metal OR rap!! I love music and have already passed that "half century" mark, but that would NOT be what I would want to listen to from MY rocking chair!! Any of the other oldies, besides the heavy metal..........even the elevator music is okay and I could take the Christmas Music all year long! [idowrite72]
i sure hope we can still listen to the good stuff like that. you should still feel pretty good till you reach about 55yrs.lol thats when it all went downhill for me. i remember when i reached 45yrs, my mom said "now you are to old to be listening to that dam heavy metal stuff" i told her for crap sake, Angus Young is 50 something and still jumping round on that stage like a school boy aaannndd dressed like one!rasp so dont intend on living with elevater music."Rock,I wanna salute you" [bunnybon7]
LOL I am almost 28, and my husband is almost 64. He's an old hippie who never quite got over the 1960s. I read this to him, and he assured you you're never too old to rock and roll. [danishcanadian]
nah,you know what's the scary thing to me? the fact that the music i listened to is now popping up in b*stardized version on commercials. AND the fact that vh-1 has suddenly gotten better.i used to hear people crack about the music played on vh-1.lol having said that,if i ever hear merciful fate on any commercial,i'm gonna pee myself.w00t [scarlet_woman]
Lol.. I sure hope they let us ROCK in our Rocking chairs.. because IF I'm forced to listen to Lawrence Welk.. They might as well just put me in a looney bin! Signed, your fellow aging Rocker.. [minx267]
lol Believe me, I am past it and the half century mark is not a bad thing at all. It means you didn't die young lol. I still like some of the music from my youngest years, but each decade has new music I also love, so I just keep on adding to my favorites as time marches on. Who is Lawrence Welk?? Kidding. We heard him as children since our parents liked watching his show. Hopefully, when you hit the halls and front porches of the retirement home, you'll still have enough of your hearing left to plug in the ear phones, and enjoy your iPdod lol. [PeacefulWmn9]
Hey Lamb.My dad is 52 years old and he loves music that adds life! I'm not a fan of metallica but I like that you love it.However, If I were to end up in a retirement home,I might listen to it.It may slow time.... [nefritite]
I am coming up to fifty too! Ha ha - we can have some wild karaoke coffee afternoons singing to Aerosmith and such like and shaking our wigs off. BTW - here in the UK Rage Against The Machine is our Xmas number 1 [snugasabugxxx]
I can only hope they start pipping Metallica threw stores and old folks homes! That is my favorite band and their music is one to be treasured. By the way you don't ;look old by any means and I have heard you are only as old as you feel. So if you wish to rock while you rock it is your prerogative. [babyangie27]
Don't you let me hear you say that!!angry Don't you know it's an insult to those of us in our 50's?? We are not old!!Besides, 50 is the new 35 as far as I'm concerned.whistle I recently mentioned that "I'm nearly 60" and my daughter went off her brain at me saying I was nowhere near being sixty. And it's true. I still feel like I'm a young thing....sometimes 16, sometimes 26, sometimes 36....certainly nowhere "near 60". You will always ROCK my friend. We the baby boomers (I think we are anyway) seem to be cut from a different cloth to our parents. We retain our youth while still accepting the responsibilities that come with age. We remain FREE of the boring, old fogey attitudes our predecessors donned. I still bop along to today's music, I know some of the current bands and I grew up with some awesome musicians many of whom my grandkids are familiar with. Forget Lawrence Welk, there are so many more groovy musos to remember. And keep on being just who you are. You are unique...just like me and everyone else.lol [MsTickle]
Too old to rock and roll, Too young to die. Not one of Jethro Tull's best efforts but I can still listen to it. Don't You just hate it when people reply to discussions after just reading the first line and not the rest. I do but I need the posts right now. [DameJenny]
lol Actually, I was referring to the entire album, but...yeah. [The_Lamb_Lies_Down]
I work on the Special Care Unit of a nursing home and they always have these horrible sappy older songs playing that make me want to cram a running chainsaw down my throat. One day we had a new man and he felt the same way. He picked out some of his CD's and brought them out. Granted, it was 60's and 70's music but it was a million times better than the 20's and 30's sap crap they had us play. Amazingly, all the other residents really liked it. The whole atmosphere changed from "nursing home" to jam fest 2009! It was awesome! Everyone was more awake and active and seemed to come out of their drug stupors long enough to seem human. The best part was while I was putting someone to bed one of the guys changed it to a rap station. Oh man! The nurse walked in and one of the ladies was sitting on top of the stereo chanting "This is evil... busta cap... this is evil... busta cap" or something like that. It was totally insane and cool and wild... we still talk about that day. The guy even moonwalked for us! Man, that was a day! [dotchianni]
music and musical taste is ageless. There are many older people who love to rock, and there are younger people who love Mozart and easy listening. It is a matter of taste , not the number on your birth certificate. [sarahruthbeth22]
Rock and Roll has no age!!! [pascal187]
I could never live in a retirement home after what I've seen during my job (working in those homes drawing blood). It was awful in some of those places and I couldn't take the music playing! Doesn't matter what's playing, I hate those places. [marysia66]
If I can't listen to my rock and have to get a pet rock instead when I get to retirement someone better get me a good rock to pet. shockedw00tcry [libby2009]
