sure we've heard barry manilow croon "i write the songs", a song which according to him can make young girls cry. but the song that can make my eyes water is far from being a lovesong and that's semisonic's Closing Time. it just reminds me of the good and bad times i've had with my friends from college who i no longer get to see.
how about you? please share that one song that can make you sentimental and the reason why it can make you cry. is it because it reminds you of memories from a not-so distant past or simply because the lyrics are kinda sad?

Whats that on your head... is it a halo? WHats that on your shoulders are they wings? you must be a walking peice of heaven.... or is it love that makes me see these things! (sniff sniff) it was my late aunts favourite song she used to sing it all the time ... and when I hear it, it always brings back those memories.... i miss her so much. [j12345]
hello! this is the very first discussion that i've posted and you're the very first to answer. i won't forget you.LOL. thank you very much! the lyrics are good but story behind the song that can make you cry is really sad. my late grandfather too has a favorite song, it's an old song entitled greenfields and my mother and her siblings always cry whenever they hear it. [jojogirl]
It would probably be Kenny Roger's Through The Year and Evascence's My immortal. These songs are so lonely that i can made me cry when im so sad.. [jhacky016]
a fellow Kenny fan! "through the years" is a beautiful song and I do really like "my immortal" as well [jsgrand0]
well a lot of songs can bring tears to my eyes...be it for their lovely sentiments, their sad story, their happy story etc. But there is one song in particular that makes me bawl, for sadness and appreciation. That is "O Sacred Head Surrounded" O Sacred Head, surrounded by crown of piercing thorn! O bleeding Head, so wounded, reviled and put to scorn! Our sins have marred the glory of Thy most Holy Face, yet angel hosts adore Thee and tremble as they gaze I see Thy strength and vigor all fading in the strife, and death with cruel rigor, bereaving Thee of life; O agony and dying! O love to sinners free! Jesus, all grace supplying, O turn Thy face on me. In this Thy bitter passion, Good Shepherd, think of me with Thy most sweet compassion, unworthy though I be: beneath Thy cross abiding for ever would I rest, in Thy dear love confiding, and with Thy presence blest. But death too is my ending; In that dread hour of need, My friendless cause befriending, Lord, to my rescue speed: Thyself, O Jesus, trace me, Right passage to the grave, And from Thy cross embrace me, With arms outstretched to save. The lyrics were translated from the text of St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1091-1153) [Modestah]
in contrast with jojogirl i am a very religious person so worship songs that says how jesus christ suffer to show humanity how to live life in this world really makes me cry like this one. [finethings101265]
MANY songs can make me cry. Some of them are the songs that i used to listen to back when i was still in school. Some others make me cry because of some other different reasons. But the one that could easily make me cry these late few months is the instrumental theme song for Japanese anime Naruto, titled "Sadness and Sorrow". Because when i was hospitalized for the cause of depression a few months back, i listen to its melody everyday from the morning i woke up to the night i fell to sleep through my cellphone mp3 feature. It's ...sad, just thinking about that. About the whole thing. [nufoundglory]
the title alone says how sentimental that song is. i'll try to catch naruto on tv and listen to it. [jojogirl]
Mine is not a song as such but a piece of music that is guaranteed to bring tears to my eyes. Barbar's Addagio, it is so sad and haunting that it never fails to make me cry [recycledgoth]
the melody must be so heart wrenching that it can make you cry. [jojogirl]
ok ok. i know some people will think this one's nuts, but the first time I heard Tim McGraw's "Don't Take the Girl" I bawled my eyes out. I was cleaning my room, and I remember just stopping and sitting down, in a laundry basket at that!, and crying my eyes out!. There's also a little known song called "a dozen red roses" forget who it's sung by, but it's about a dad that dies when his daughter is very young. He writes her a note telling her how much he loves her and he'll always be there with her and that he's with her while she's walking down the aisle, and on her wedding day has her mom leave in her bride's room with a dozen red roses and she gets the letter just before walking down the aisle. I LOVE THAT SONG. [jsgrand0]
songs about fathers on the wedding of their daughters are really tearkerking. [jojogirl]
i could relate to the song "there's no easy way to break somebody's heart"...it's so true that in a break up both are still sad somehow especially to the one who invested so much in a relationship and all of a sudden the partner fell out of love or found someone new.:( [prettyfeigh]
yeah, break-ups are never easy. [jojogirl]
Don't even start playing "I Made It Through the Rain" by Barry Manilow. My tears begin from the first few notes. Reminds me too often of the very tough times I've gone through my life and how, someway, I am still here, still going. [Bee1955]
must be tears of joy right? [jojogirl]
one love - blue, show me the meaning - back street boys heel the world - mj [vivekasokan]
Mine would have to be The Dance by Garth Brooks: Everytime I hear it, I cry my eyes out: Looking back on the memory of The dance we shared beneath the stars above For a moment all the world was right How could I have known you'd ever say goodbye And now I'm glad I didn't know The way it all would end the way it all would go Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain But I'd of had to miss the dance Holding you I held everything For a moment wasn't I the king But if I'd only known how the king would fall Hey who's to say you know I might have changed it all And now I'm glad I didn't know The way it all would end the way it all would go Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain But I'd of had to miss the dance Yes my life is better left to chance I could have missed the pain but I'd of had to miss the dance [EagleEyes]
No, actually it reminds me of dancing with my dad and my papa joe at my wedding, I lost my papa joe in 1997 and my dad this march. The pain refers to watching them suffer from the cancer they had, but if I think back on my wedding day when I danced with them both I can feel us dancing again. [EagleEyes]
yeah ik had this song ..that used to make me cry ...it the MY HEART WILL GO ON...BY CELINE SOND TRACK OF TITANIC..actualy i never new wat masd me cry was it the movie or the song ..but when ever i hear the song i shed easy tears ..same to the movie titanic which makes me even crry real hard...i love that movie with a pasion mostly the last part when jack dies and tell kate u got to move on u will marry have more kid be happy and u will just keep me in ur heart forever.. actualy am crying now ....i just love titanic and that sound track by celin [haqueen]
the ending of the movie is really tragic. [jojogirl]
this is a tough one because i am a real softy. i am very sentimental so alot of songs can make me cry and have over the years. one song that makes me cry is BABY MINE. it is from the movie DUMBO and the reason it makes me cry is because of my son who is growing so fast and it is such a sentimental song. it is our song and it just touches my heart everytime i hear it. [jannyw]
kids growing up so fast really bring tears to a parents eye. [jojogirl]
Butterfly kisses. Also, The Living Years. [daisygirl124]
Samson by Regina Spektor reminds me of lost loves... Trouble Sleeping by The Perishers reminds me of a certain someone... [tanjila]
Its a hindi song " Tadap tadap ke is dil se aah nikalti rahi " which makes me cry whenevcer i hear it . Its really full of pain and you really feel the emotions . [jamie622]
so tadap, tadap ke is dil se aah nikalti rahi must me a sad phrase? what does it mean jamie? [jojogirl]
Cliff DeYoung sang "Lady,My Sweet Lady" in a movie called Sunshine years ago. That song gets me every time! [browneyedgirl]
'My Heart will go on' by Celine Dion (theme song to the movie 'Titanic')..I cannot hear this song without choking up. I reminds me of all the people in my life who i loved, then lost -esp my father, and how those people still live on in your heart despite the fact they are now 'gone'.. [Jusred]
that's my brother's favorite song. [jojogirl]
There are many, but if I have to mention only one, it has to be "You've got to hide your love away" by The Beatles, sung and written by John Lennon [someincome]
there are lots of lots of songs who make me sentimental whenever i listen any song i put myself in place of singer and then i feel the pain and happiness which is in the lyrics of the songs. [junior07]
i just don't know if it's true that the best lovesongs are composed by people who are brokenhearted. [jojogirl]
one of the songs that makes me cry: A Million Love Songs ~ Take That Put your head against my life. What do you hear. A million words just trying to make. The love song of the year. Close your eyes but don't forget. What you have heard. A man who's trying to say three words. The words that make me scared. A million love songs later. And here I am trying to tell you that I care. A million love songs later. And here I am. Looking to the future now. This is what I see. A million chances pass me by. A million chances to hold you. Take me back, take me back. To where I used to be. To hide away from all my truth. Through the light I see. A million love songs later. And here I am trying to tell you that I care. A million love songs later. And here I am . hope you liked it. [queenie_sum]
This might be strange, but the most audio thing that gets me near crying, is not a song, but rather a melody used in the naruto anime series. I believe anyone who knows the anime knows also the melody, "Sadness and Sorrow!" Tears just jump to your eyes! Maybe the scenario and the story line of the anime series also has something to do with it. I've witnessed several grown up men's tears falling when reaching a special episode in the series. [mystery777]
you're the second person who mentioned that anime themesong. it must really be so sentimental. [jojogirl]
The one song that always makes me cry is Journey's "Send her my love." The song is an oldie but goodie that hits a nerve in me. I use to listen to Journey a lot when I was a teenager, but if I hear the song over the radio today, my eyes start tearing. It's a beautiful song with a story. Journey is a classic. [towongfoo27]
A song by Mariah Carey about people looking down on you from heaven and at the end it says sorry i never told you all i wanted to say...cant remember the name of the song but its definately one of her best [kate44]
i think the title is One Sweet Day. [jojogirl]
I like also the songs of barry, but I like most is Kenny Rogers, "through the years". [berna_tenorio]
My song is "Without You" fom the musical Rent. Its a sad song anyway but it has a special meaning for me. My grandmother died suddenly after a long illness back in 1999. I still remember the date of her funeral because I had booked to see Rent in London for its final performance on Oct 30th 1999 and my grandmother's funeral was the day before. I wasn't sure I should still go but my family and friends all said I should. I fell in love with the show anyway but the word's of Without You really struck a chord. My grandmother was my best friend when I was a child and although life went on, a part of me did die without her [diablouk]
Well, I must say Tere Bina song by Guru, I don't understand the lyrics, but God! the music is so so so charminggggg! it makes me cry so bad, I cry mostly when the girl start vocalizing, it sounds so sweet, and it reminds me of my husband, and that I have to away from him for 2 long years because we met in the internet, and I used to live in El Salvador, and he used to live in India, so till we settle down, we had to be away from each other for that long, but we used to talk on yahoo everyday for hours, we couldn't stop saying I love you to each other, and he used to dedicate songs to me, so he recommended me to listen to Guru music, so I downloaded the song Tere Bina, and listen to it, I couldn't stop crying, and I heard it over and over again, it's been a year since I knew about this song and it still gives me the same feeling, and it makes me cry like crazy, I just love this song! [paulinabhadra1577]
what if you finally discover that the lyrics are kinda funny, like weird alyankovich's you don't love me anymore? nah, just kidding. if the melody is charming then the meaning must also be nice. [jojogirl]
"I love you, Goodbye"... It makes me remember the time when my boyfriend was really hurting because of what I did and he gave up on our relationship because I was playing with his feelings. He told me he loved me but maybe, there was something that made me do what I did so he decided to give up on our relationship. He really told me, he never wanted to leave but for that reason of me playing around and hurting his feelings, he's giving me time and space for myself. Ouch! That was like, the whole world went down on me! [archerzbaby]
Butterfly kisses. The one were the father is singing about his daughter growing up, it makes me cry every time. [mommey20032005]
father and daughter stories in songs are really so touching. [jojogirl]
Aside from those very heartwarming christian songs there's this one song that could really put me into tears. It is charelne's "never been to me". I really love the lyrics of the song and I felt that the song was kinda made for me haha..that song reminds me of my stupid mistakes from the past and kinda regret it and so that makes me cry really.. yeah, i've never been to me!huhu :( [sweetsue]
hey, you know what paradise is? it's a lie. a fantasy recreated by people and places as you'd like them to be. but you know what truth is? it's that little baby you're holding and it's that man you fought with this morning, the same one you're going to make love to tonight, that's truth, that's love. yes, that song is nice. [jojogirl]
"Dance with my Father" by Luther Vandross. [bad1981]
father and daughter story again, very touching really. [jojogirl]
for me it would be Wind Beneith My Wings by Bett Milder I just love her music. It is the most loving and sad song I know. [hoghoney]
if one person would sing that song and dedicate it to me, i wouldn't know what to say. (i love to sing that song in karaoke barsLOL) [jojogirl]
U2 - Ultra Violet (Light My Way). This is a perfect song! [timala]
When I hear the song candle in the wind, I usually cried because I can relate in that song.... [Osbert]
isn't that princess diana's funeral song? [jojogirl]
I have lots of favorite songs that remind me of people i have been with, not so long ago. But among these songs, I love "Ever Since the World Begun" most, and i would love to hear it over and over again even if most of the time, it really makes my eyes well up with tears longing for the one best friend that I haven't seen for years. [g_aileen09]
the song that really touched my heart was that of england dan and john ford coley, titled, JUST TELL ME YOU LOVE ME. that was the song in the background when my partner gave her "yes" to my proposal "will you marry me?" although we had another song during our wedding day, entitled ENDLESS LOVE. i really love to hear sentimental and love songs. they lighten up my day. [ryanphil01]
hey you're sweet, being able to appreciate sentimental songs and all. good for you wife. i just thought you're going to say england dan and john ford coley's SAD TO BELONG. LOL [jojogirl]
The song that makes me cry is Whitney Houston, I will always love you. Her voice is so perfect in this song it heightens the intensity. But the idea of walking away from someone and making the ultimate sacrifice because you know that you are not right for them is what gets me. "If I should stay I would only be in your way. So I'll go but I know I'll think of you every step of the way. And i will always love you..." [helloyou10125]
"Amazing Grace" is the one song that always brings tears to my eyes. It seems to be the music and not so much the words. I have never really figured out why that song does that to me but I definitely have a physical reaction to the music. [royal52gens]
Umm..fix me - coldplay makes me cry like a baby! LOL [cityQuestion]
There are actually 2 songs that always make me cry when I hear them. One is "Butterfly Kisses" and the other is "In My Daughter's Eyes". I'm posting their lyrics below: ~~~~~~ "Butterfly Kisses" by Bob Carlisle There are 2 things I know for sure She was sent here from heaven And she's daddy's little girl As I drop to my knees by her bed at night She talks to Jesus and I close my eyes And I thank God for all of the joys in my life oh, but most of all For butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer Sticking little white flowers all up in her hair "Walk beside the pony, Daddy, it's my first ride" "I know the cake lookds funny, Daddy, but I sure tried" In all that I've done wrong, I must have done something right To deserve a hug every morning And butterfly kisses at night Sweet sixteen today She's looking like her Mama a little more everyday One part woman, the other part To perfume and makeup from ribbons and curls Trying her wings out in a great big world. But I remember Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer Sticking little white flowers all up in her hair "You know how much I love you, Daddy, but if you don't mind" "I'm only gonna kiss you on the cheek this time" With all that I've done wrong, I must have done something right To deserve a hug every morning And butterfly kisses at night All the precious time Like the wind, the years go by Precious butterfly Spread your wings and fly She'll change her name today She'll make a promise and I'll give her away Standing in the bride room, just staring at her She asked me what I'm thinking and I said "I'm not sure. I just feel like I'm losing my baby girl" She leaned over... gave me Butterfly kisses with her Mama there Sticking little white flowers all up in her hair "Walk me down the aisle, Daddy, it's just about time" "Does my wedding gown look pretty, Daddy?" "Daddy, don't cry" Oh, with all that I've done wrong, I must have done something right To deserve her love every morning and butterfly kisses I couldn't ask God for more, man this is what love is I know I gotta let her go, but I'll always remember every hug in the morning and butterfly kisses at night ~~~~~ "In My Daughter's Eyes" by Martina McBride In my daughter's eyes, I am a hero I am strong and wise and I know no fear But the truth is plain to see She was sent to rescue me I see who I wanna be In my daughter's eyes In my daughter's eyes, everyone is equal Darkness turns to light and the world is at peace This miracle God gave to me Gives me strength when I am weak I find reason to believe In my daughter's eyes And when she wraps her hand around my finger Oh it puts a smile in my heart Everything becomes a little clearer I realize what life is all about It's hanging on when your heart has had enough It's giving more when you feel like giving up I've seen the light It's in my daughter's eyes In my daughter's eyes I can see the future A reflection of who I am and what will be Though she'll grow and someday leave Maybe raise a family When I'm gone I hope you see How happy she made me For I'll be there In my daughter's eyes [ctv101103]
i sang the lyrics you've posted and now, i'm misty eyed. [jojogirl]
it is Evanessence's My Immortal....it is a very sad song.... [baby83]
First it wasBee Gee's song, but we are not lucky to each other. Now I have 4 daughters, my theme song change like a family man. It was Imagine by John Lennon. This is my own theme song as a loely man caring to what I see on my surroundings. [ondo1015]
Two songs make me really cry: Two less Lonely People In The World and Come what may Both sung by Air Supply. They are very touching and they make me remember my lost love. [hersmart4ever]
