Would You Listen To Foreign Music Though You Couldnt Understand The Lyrics

I am an avid fan of foreign music. Though I might not understand the lyrics, the melody and the rhythm of some foreign music soothes me. I find foreign music interesting and the style differs from every country. I enjoy listening to Chinese and Korean music. I am currently listening to Super Junior, DBSK, TaeYang, Shinee which are from Korea and SodaGreen, Jay Chou, Ambrose Hsu and S.H.E. which are from Taiwan. How about you, what do you think about foreign music? What artist do you listen to?

I wouldn't listen to music whose lyrics' language isn't familiar to me. I wouldn't like to be offending those who do understand them should I be in a situation where I'm listening to music that are swearing, if you know what I mean. I've never liked songs for their tone or melody alone. I'm fond of lyrics as well. [laydee]

I don't listen to a song that I can't understand the lyrics. I have heard some song that the lyrics are alien to me and it's not pleasant. I don't have any favorite artist in music except those who wrote the old time christian hymns and spiritual songs. Those are the music that I listen to. I am not listening to worldly music. Gone are the days of old when I listen to all types of music. Now, my heart has been changed when I allowed Christ in my heart.lol Music is one of the areas in which I need to change too.lol [learn2earn]
Hi Learn2earn, Some fantastic groups in christian music include 'Young deciples' long ago I know but very cool. do you listen them? There's another group called 'One Way' I did some graphics for one of their albums a while back. Religous music has come along why since the hymn. One track I love is 'Moving on up' again don't know the artist but a blinding song to drive to. [virtualbod]

Well, I started listening English music when I was student of 6th class and didn't understood anything . But I keep listening because its their music which forced me to . .. so my answer will be "Yes" ... Some times I listen song from Rassia and France because they are good in music and that's all ... Thanks ... :) [sincere4frdship]
Yea ...you are right .. Listening English music has helped me too much in learning this language ... Thanks ... :) [sincere4frdship]

I would. AND I have. To begin with I am an English speaking American and even when I turn of the radio with English words most of the time I can not understand them. Its almost like they are drunk and slurring their works.lol. Given ths choice I prefer insturmental music.....no words. I like the music I hear in the Chineese and Mexican restaurants and stores. [muscles4me]
Hi muscles4me! I also find instrumental music very relaxing. I listen to those kind of music to make me feel sleepy. [sachii315]

Yes I would listen to the song even if I don't understand the lyrics, but only if I love the rhythm or music of the song. For me music is more important than lyrics as I like instrumentals more than songs. [shona264]

Yes, I am one of those people who listens to foreign music. I don't really know why I like it because I don't really understand the language...maybe the language and the rhythm of the music... [joannaleed]

yep... I started listening to music from an early age and lots of it was in English so I didn't understand any of it... as long as I liked the style, of course I would... [AcidPT]
I also love foreing music, before when Thalia came here in the Philipppines I got interested in spanish songs because of her. Even if I don't understand but I tried to memorize some of her songs spanish is similar to tagalog so it is very easy for me to follow it. Right now Korean songs are in I like their style is different from us although I don't really understand the lyrics but I still want to listen it. [agv0419]

hi sachii315.. i am a big fan of j-music and k-music..i like the songs even though that i don't really understand the lyrics except for a few common words..for j-music, my favourites are: l'arc~en~ciel, aiko, yui, stereopony, orange range, janne da arc, boom boom satellites, nico touches the walls, doping panda, abingdon boys school, funky munky babys, etc.. i've just recently listen to k-pop..by far i like to hear super junior, snsd, and kara..the only word i understand is saranghae..lol.. [blurenciel]
i've heard of high and mighty color before..bleach opening song.. :) i'm not really sure what genre do they play..lol..ichirin no hana sounds like metal but hot limit is..metaldisco or something??lol..thanks for the recommendation.. d:)b [blurenciel]

Hi, yes I always do. I understand Chinese, English, Cantonese and Hokkien dialect only but that hasn't stopped me from liking Japanese, Korean, Indonesia, etc music. I believe music has not language barrier. Although I don't understand them, but the song still touches me. For example, Utada Hikaru - First Love and Misia - Everything, they are a classic to me. And there is a lot more out there. Cheers [warvial]
Oh I see. Although I would like to introduce you so other singers/groups but at the moment, I don't really remember any of them. Let me update you if I remember any. Cheers [warvial]

Hello. I do listen to different kinds of music, pop, oldies, jazz, classical, and so on. And, yes, I very much like listening to foreign music too. When I travel to foreign countries, I often buy CDs of the music of the countries. I have a collection of CDs, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, German, Malaysian, Italian, and more. Foreign songs and music are very beautiful and very enchanting too ! [greenline]
I like different music in foreign languages. For example Italian, French. When it sounds beautiful and fine melodic line there. Often I play the music from one of songs that I like on piano. [timka11]

I listen to some music and don't understand one word. A good song is a good song. No matter what language it is been sung in. It's all about the passion of the singer and the song that connects you either mentally, physically, or spiritually or all three. That my thinking on music. [rodstar]

I suppose it depends on what music you're being exposed to,whether it be from your own cultural background or one that you'd be interested in hearing from, the radio,TV,or internet or what clubs you go to or what you share with your friends..Here in Northern Ireland, the UK National TV and Radio stations play almost exclusively only English Language music, although Irish Music and Language features on the Irish Nationals..There's a video on Youtube called "Where the Hell's Matt?" that I've discovered and enjoy..it Features a Guy (Called Matt!lol) who's travelled to countries around the world and basically has created a video documentary of him visiting the countries and dancing on camera with the Locals..It has an Indian Music song called "Praan" as a soundtrack which I don't understand, but it perfectly underscores the joyful silliness of a bunch of people expressing themselves in the international language of a silly dance! [ShepherdSpy]
I'd just like to Mention "Horslips" here, who were/are THE original Irish (Celtic) Folk Rock Band who recorded many albums and toured Ireland,Europe, and the US in the 70's, and broke up in the early '80's..They have recently reformed and I went to see their reunion "Tour" of Belfast and Dublin-We went to the Belfast concert-a very atmospheric gig, seeing them Live again after a long break...There are clips from the concerts on Youtube if You'd like to see and hear more of them!happy [ShepherdSpy]

Of course, it is music. They lyrics are just another instrument technically in the melody. So in short yes. [shutupandbuyit]

Foreign languages and accents give vocalists their own personal style and can give some singers a really unique tone that would be hard to impersonate. I do like listening to music in different languages because I would be ignorant to only accept music in my own language because there could be bands out there that would change my whole musical perspective I'm just not finding them because they don't speak English. So stay open minded just because a band can't speak English doesn't mean they still don't have a beautiful vision or story to bring forth to you. [jambi462]

Yes I would because music is a universal language so it can reach to others even though they cant understand the words because the melody can still resonate with them.I remember a time when all I could pick up on my radio was indian music and I had a ball listening to it [ronnyb]

Depends on how much I enjoy the beat, tempo and such. [MrKennedy]

i'm not a fan of music but the mayor part of music i listen to is from other countries or in other language i don't know why but they sound much more interesting [hernandez2]

Yes, definitely!! I do that all the time with mainly Korean pop music and sometimes Chinese music =D I don't really care for the lyrics too much, mainly the melody and the rhythm of the song. As long as it has a good beat and melody, I'm probably going to like it regardless of what they say in the song. I don't usually follow just one Korean band or one Chinese band; I just like a few songs here and there and keep in mind which band or singer the song is by. Though I have to say that I really like 2NE1, Shinee, and 2PM, mainly because I like listening to a majority of their songs. I think sometimes, I prefer foreign music to American mainstream music because in American, the lyrics can get pretty crazy/weird/explicit and so I have to take into account whether I like the lyrics or not, or if it's okay with me, in order to like a song. But in foreign music, I only have to listen to the melody and if it's good, then I like the song. Plus, the radios constantly play the most popular songs on the air and then I hear it so much that I get tired of the song, so foreign music, the ones I know that won't play over the air, is like a breath of fresh air for me =] [ishme4nowz]

Hi sachii! I like listening to the foreign songs, especially the english songs,of which I can understand the lyrics nd can also learn some english. The molody and the rhythm of music attract me too.S.H.E and Jay chou are very popular in China. And I really like them. Happy mylotting! [anniege]
Hi anniege! It was my Chinese friend from Shanghai who introduced me to Chinese music. At first I thought there was only Mandarin and Cantonese songs, I was shocked when she told me that China has many songs in different dialects. I was interested though my tongue gave me a hard time learning to sing Chinese songs. I can't utter much since my native language does not have many tones unlike Chinese. I still love listening to them. [sachii315]

I like some foreign music as well even though I don't understand some of it I still like to listen to it.I really like to hear some spanish songs they are nice to hear even though I don't know some of the words. [jahernandezrivas]

Hi. Yes, I enjoy listening to foreign music. When my uncle came home from Japan, he brought home a lot of Japanese music CDs. We play the CDs even if we could not understand anything. Sometimes, we would ask him to interpret the song for us. Also, Korean TV series is a hit here in the Philippines. In the process, even their soundtracks also become a big hit in the country. People from here would normally sing the songs without even understanding the meanings. [soledadclickz]
Hello soledadclickz! I like to listen Korean film and drama soundtracks as well as from Taiwanese drama. I remember being a fan of F4 Taiwanese band when I was in high school. But here in Japan now, anime soundtracks are far more popular than drama OST's, most of the songs are J-rock. [sachii315]

I am a very big fan of Music. It doesn't matter which language the lyrics of the songs are.If the music of the song is good I dig into it,I love it.The internal message that the music carries is conveyed to me,and I don't need the lyrics to explain it to me. I love listening Foreign music even though I don't understand their lyrics. [rleankus]

Yes i like listening to foreign sounds too. I have collections like Latin, Korean, Japanese,Indian,Jamaican,Malaysian,German and many more.I can not understand the lyrics but I love the melody and beat. It makes me relax especially when i am facing a variety of work loads.huh! [DenverLC]

I always listen to either Japanese or Arabic music. I also have a few french songs in my playlist. Just the words themselves and how they sound, even if I don't understand them, intrigue. I find myself listening and trying to get used to the rhythm of that language. Then when I have one guy speaking in French and another speaking in Italian, I can tell the difference. It's really jsut learning about our world for me. It's very interesting. [america220]

I really LOVE listening to foreign music. I have been listening to Japanese songs eversince, and also Korean and Taiwanese music. I don't really understand some lyrics and all, but I try to make it a point that I search for the translation and also sing along to those songs. The lyrics are important to me, of course, but I think there's nothing wrong with listening to foreign music even we don't understand it. I really appreciate the songs that were made in other countries. Take care! :) [offlimits]
Hi offlimits! I see you are are lyrics person, that's nice. I often search for a foreign song's english or japanese translation but I sometimes there are none or if there are, they are translated on a language which I still cant understand. haha. So I tend to listen to the melody. Happy Mylotting! [sachii315]

Yes, I listen to music in Spanish, French, Japanese, and other European and Asian languages even if I cannot understand the lyrics because I understand the emotions in the song. I feel the emotions of the music. [rogue13xmen13]

Hi Sachii! I also love listening to the music of other languages although I cant understand them. Just like yours, I just want to hear the melody and rhytm of the song. I love listening to Korean love song and some remix. Also from Spain and some part of Europe. [junmae]

Sure I do. It is the rhythm that gets me going. I like the Salsa which is normally not in English but the music is fab!!! [allknowing]

Well there are a lot of contributing factors why we do listen to a music and that is like what you said even if we don't understand the lyrics, it could be the tone, the artist (koreans, taiwanese, chinese songs), take those songs for example they do get a lot of listeners from all over the world and only a few understand the language, maybe you already know the reason why. One could be that they are popularized, the listeners love the beat that they wanna dance to it and stuff like that. BTW in connection to this there is this one video or commercial in youtube wherein understanding the lyrics of the songs is very important, it goes like "I wanna fu** with you...." "I wanna fu** you in the a**" or something like that. It was aired in a foreign country not English speaking country and the oldies and the kids are banging their heads while listening to the music because they don't know what was being stated in the song or what it means, so you see how significant it is to understand the lyrics? [anne09]

Hi Sachii315,I have a couple of the same tracks in different languages as the lyrics, even if I don't understand them, add to the accompaniment. Mother Earth is a french/english collaboration of french rap, english lyrics and is fantastic. A big while back Kelly Velance (if that's how you spell the name,)released 'Kiss' which was originally a turkish number one hit. English lyrics to turkish music. The original was a total floor stomper in the Resorts whereas KV 'English' version didn't quite fit the back beat and was a bit of a flop as far as I'm concerned. Bangra beats are great too and my favourite dance track ever is 'Yaki Yaki' don't know who its by (my partner would be able to tell me) but a great, great, great dance track that has been mixed, remixed and still doing the circuit now after being released about 10 years ago. Party on people!!!!!!! In whatever language you like!!!!!! [virtualbod]
And let's face it for many, the first words learnt in any foreign language are the swear words. I know rude words in Italian, french, spanish, and have touched upon japanese to chinese so I would certainly be listening out for these words and would then chose to avoid or not the track in question. English and american songs especially rap, street, punk, grunge, trance, techno any other source you can think of is full of swearing and offensive words so what's the difference. If you are listening to your music loudly and may be viewed as intrusive then choose your music selection wisely. Me, I love music whatever the language as long as it's good. [virtualbod]

No, basically I am a Tamilian(Tamilnadu(speaks Tamil language)person from India). Though I am a lecturer in engineering college, I ask my students to listen music in Mother Tongue, so that we might get more exposure towards the music and we gain more knowledge.. I believe that innovative ideas will come only in the way of mother tongue.. we think through our mother tongue and we try to expose in foreign languages.. so that our full creativity will be resisted... Likewise, I like to listen music only in my mother tongue... but, due to circumstances, I am forced to listen some foreign language musics.. [arunmails]

Hi sachi! It is said that music has no language. It beats, rythem and percussion are good and ring bells in the ear, I enjoy the music, irrespective of its lyrics. It is always fun to hear different kind of music as it increase our sphere of knowledge about music. Sometimes listening to folk and regional music could be really touching and I do that also. [dpk262006]

Any music that is soothing and relaxing for the mind is ok with me. I have no problem even though I don't understand the lyrics. Music is good for every one. It can make one relax or dance. It brings happiness. It makes you smile. It helps you forget all your worries. It is the best way to forget all your problems and move on. It makes you lively. [smartjack]

pehaps, speecialy when i listened for first time songs that sing in english very fast, so i must listened twice or 3 times to really understand the meaning of this songs, or when i coudnt by these way, i search in google and found the lyric of this song,,, the problem is im student of enlish, and isnt my mother tongue, so i prefer to practise my english trying to listen twice the song before that searched it in google. i really like songs from uk and usa, for example, rolling stones, linkin park, muse, brian adams, lady gaga,my chemical romance, etc! lol!! [alilin28]

Yes! Well, Tarkan, and ketchup song are the ones that I remember off hand. But quite a few years ago, there was this young nymphet who used to sing in some language possibly Russian or any such place. It used to sound heavenly. Some Chinese music, and Japanese music also sounds very pleasant to my ears. English of course is something I cannot exactly qualify as foreign because I watch too many English movies. And you've already mentioned I shouldnt understand the lyrics. :) So yes, I enjoy foreign music. :) Within our country as well, I like the music from Bengal, it sounds wonderful. So also music from North Eastern part of our country is absolute delight. [vandana7]

Yes, sometimes I do find myself listening to foreign music, regardless of whether I understand the lyrics. I can't name any artists, because when I listen to such music, I usually just stumble upon it somewhere, like in a movie or on the radio, but I don't usually go buy/download it. An exception was Nydia Rojas, a Mexican singer, that I was crazy about in high school. I was studying Spanish then so I understood little bits of her songs and would actually take the time to sit and translate the ones I liked the best so I would know what I was singing along with. I did the same with some Shakira in those days too. I live relatively close to the Mexican border, so there are several Spanish-only radio stations here, and sometimes I have to pause on one - so much of that music just makes you want to dance! And you don't need to know the words to dance! :) I've also enjoyed and danced around the house/car to some Jamaican, Irish, Italian, Japanese, African, and South American music. I just love music. It definitely brings another level of enjoyment when a song has lyrics that I understand and that mean something to me, though! :) [celestialbloom]
I find Spanish music sexy, Shakira's music is very sexy. LOL. Nydia Rojas, hmmm I would like to listen to her songs. [sachii315]

Hi Sachii, Since i've been exposed to different types of people from other countries i learned to appreciate their music. Like some vietnamese songs, korean songs, jamaican songs, etc. as long as the beat and rhythm is good, i will really appreciate it. i will love listening to it until i get used to the music and try to understand its lyrics. most of the time i ask my friends to interpret it for me. so i have a way to understand it. [msfrancisco9369]

I would at least attempt to listen. music is more that just the lyrics. but i must admit it would be hard to understand what they are talking about if i do not understand the language. american music is liked all around the globe, in many countries that do not speak or understand english. so it would be wrong for us not to return the favor [tdstevens]

I love music and music does not require lyrics. If a person is only interesting lyrics then they could read or listen to poetry. [whiteheather39]

hello ... i listen to all kind of music, except to some real heavy metal, now being in a mixed country (Mauritius) i'm exposed to a lot of music of different cultures & languages. I love instrumental most because then it's only the art form of music that reaches my soul. If i have to listen to foreign music, why not, i do love the melody too. I have the chance of speaking English (also the official language), French (by more than 70% of the population) & Creole (native, derivative of Afro-French), i listen to music from all around the world, even if i don't understand the language. Some great examples would be Latino, Indian & some Chinese music. I do care about the lyrics, so when i come upon a Hindi song that comes from a romantic movie, i may go find some translation with my friends & i do understand a few words too ;) I would listen to Spanish or Italian songs for there are a lot of great Latin Artist in this world, such as Il Divo, Pavarotti, Andrea Boccelli, etc ... So there's no limit to music, for the only language it speaks is always understood by the heart. N-joy 2 the MAXx ... cheers! [Richy2K9]

No I do not listen to music if I can not under the lyrics. I like to sing along with the song and if I do not understand the lyrics I could not do that. [happy6162]

I love african music. Which is often in other languages. I also love reggae and its somtimes done in different languages. [jdyrj777]
Lady smith black mumbasso. Last word there may be misspelled, They dont have instirments. Its very nice. [jdyrj777]

I'm listen only to English songs, my friend. But Korean,Chinese and Indian I don't because I don't understand what they talking about? [aerous]

hmm, i find it's very funny. some native songs are loved by u as foreign musics. i'm also listening to some musics of the from Taiwan or hongkong or inland. i also listen to some korean, french and other language musics without knowing these languages, only the melody is beautiful, that's ok. [yolanda19191]

I appreciate foreign music. I am currently listening to Korean song which is the oST of the Korean Drama You're Beautiful. I don't understand the song, but the rhythm and melody attacts me. I do search on the lyrics even if it is Korean language and I sing the song in korean words. Actually I have memorized the song Perhaps love ost for Princess Hours. I search the english translation on the net so that I will truly understand the meaning of the song. Actually I don't care if it is a chinese , japanese or korean music as long as I like the rhythm and the voice of the singer it become my favorite. [grecychunny26]

Hi, For me, I can not bear to listen to the music with the lyric which I can not understand. If I really love the melody of this foreign music, I'll try my best to study the meaning of the lyric and imitate it. [lullaby2005]

I love the French songs, the Edith Piaf type stuff but aside from that I rarely listen to foreign music. I come from Italy and last time I visited there, my cousin took me to a dance club where they played the same sort of stuff they play here in Australia and I got to thinking about how much they miss out over there not being able to understand the words to the songs! To me the lyrics are just as important as the music and to truly appreciate a song you need both! I do enjoy foreign stuff too although I miss out on a lot. [paula27661]

Yes I would and do listen to music from other countries.I especially love the music from Puerto Rico and some of the Dominican Republic. Hispanic music interests me. I do like some Vietnamese music as well. I dont understand a word they are saying but just the beat and the way it sounds makes me feel as If I understand every word. I like Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Frankie Ruiz, Hector Lavoe, and many more. Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, and of course reggaetone are wonderful different types of latin music. Even if you dont understand them, they are still very catchy. I speak spanish so I understand but my friends sing every word and have no idea what they are singing.lol Music is a universal language. Sometimes by watching a person's expressions when they are singing is enough to understand. I recommend that everyone try and sample music from other countries. Where music is concerned there is only one race of people. Music lovers. Music touches all types of people from castles to cardboard boxes. I honestly believe that countries could communicate better with each other if they incorporated music in there somewhere. Happy Holidays dl [dloveli]

i am from canada and enjoy listening to both french and english music (even though i dont understand that much french). i also have two neices from china and like to listen to chinese traditional music as well as my native hungarian music. [cher913]

Music is international language. Though many prefer to know the lyrics of a song, one needs not know the lyrics of the song in order to enjoy it. As long as one enjoys listening to it, it is music. To those not able to appreciate it, it is noise. [whyaskq]

I do it all the time. Lyrics can be translated, however, it is the sound of the music that we are first attracted to, not the message. [Canellita]

I love listening to music from other countries, and I collect music from around the world. Before I visit a new country, I usually try to find some information about the local bands and singers, and then I buy some cds while I am there. My friends from other countries know that I love foreign music, and they sometimes send me cds etc. I also use the internet a lot and I like to listen to foreign music on Youtube or listen to internet radio. At the moment my favourite singer is a Russian woman called Zemfira. I only understand a few of the words, but I simple love her music, and I can listen to her songs for hours. I also like Italian, Polish and Japanese music, and I have discovered many wonderful songs. I don't understand the lyrics, but I love the melody and the rhythm. [Porcospino]

Hi, sachii315. I don't really know that many foreign musicians. But, I do love Latin music. I have listened to them, but I don't know the artist that sings the song. If given the chance, I would love to listen to something that is much different than I normally would listen to. [cream97]

yeah i would, i actually love south african and nigerian music though i do not understand the words. The tune and the melody is what get to me. [priscy25]

I barely listen to what we play here, let alone anything else. So I guess at this time, no. [marysia66]

I do not listen to a lot of foreign music, because I enjoy the lyrics most in music. [Picquarian]

Hi! I also listen to foreign music even I dont understand. I like to listen to them because they are very refreshing. I like to listen especially if the artists are girls because I think they are very beautiful. ^^ [kengene11]
